Position will perform mechanical repairs to the Town owned fleet using a variety of means ranging from: small engine power tools to heavy-duty computerized equipment under the general supervision of the Fleet Operations Supervisor. Duties include: performing main engine, ignition, fuel system, and emission control system diagnosis and repair, as well as repair of diesel and gas fuel system configurations. Performing diagnosis and repair of automatic, standard, and electronic transmissions; mechanical and control systems; transaxle and transfer case systems; and all phases of final drive operation. Performing diagnosis and repair of various types of suspension, steering, power assist, and alignment systems; as well as various types of brake systems to include: hydraulic systems, disc and drum brake applications, air brake system, and anti-lock brake system operations. Performing electronic system diagnosis and repair, which may include: starting and charging systems, electrical wiring systems, gauges and warning systems, and accessory systems. Performing in various aspects of the Town’s garage inventory system and opening job orders for repair work in a computerized system.

Responsible for diagnosing and repairing ventilation systems, heating and air conditioning systems, refrigerant recovery, and mechanical systems. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external customers. Must have the ability to read, write and understand complicated wiring diagrams, technical manuals and specifications, and to operate various types of equipment and vehicles. Requires the ability to push, pull and lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or noise. * Selected candidate must have a complete set of tools for use on the job. *

A high school diploma or GED is required. Two years of experience as a diesel and/or automotive technician and the ability to perform basic welding skills are required. ASE certifications are preferred. Qualified applicants will have a valid Virginia driver's license with an excellent driving record and the ability to obtain a Virginia Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B, Virginia State Inspection License and Air Conditioning Certification within 6 months of employment. This position will follow the CDL drug testing guidelines during the employment period. The selected candidate must undergo and successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening. A satisfactory post offer pre-employment criminal background investigation will be required of the selected applicant. * Overtime work will be required as needed. *

Starting salary range is $33,961/year - $42,451/year, depending upon qualifications. Retirement benefits are provided through the Virginia Retirement System. Direct Deposit of pay is required for all full-time employees.
