Summary

The Public Health Nurse role with the Child Care Health Program provides health consultation, training, and education to child care and early learning educators to elevate their skills in guiding, nurturing, and supporting the health, safety, nutrition, behavior, social and emotional development, and learning of all children in their care. The position is part of an interdisciplinary team of nurse, mental health, nutrition, and educator consultants who collaborate around in-person services to those educators as well as create and disseminate resources for them, model best health practices, and advocate for the children and their providers to have equitable access to anti-racist opportunities for their well-being The successful candidate for this position will have excellent communication, relationship, and trust-building skills; knowledge of young children’s health and how adults can support it; the ability to work with diverse educators and families amid the complexities of the under-resourced early learning sector; and an evident passion for serving those living furthest from justice.

Job Duties

As member of the interdisciplinary Child Care Health Program (CCHP) team, this Career Service Public Health Nurse (PHN) will focus on two bodies of work:

  • Providing health consultation, training, and education to child care and early learning educators, parents, and community members to promote the health, safety, and emotional well-being of children within early learning programs throughout Seattle and King County.
  • Helping the CCHP to develop anti-racist practices in its work with young children, families, and educators that address such realities as a lack of access to resources for healthy child development; communications that can make health information more accessible, applicable, and understood among diverse providers; and resources, referrals, and connections that can elevate a Public Health team to be community-informed and equity-centered in its service.
  • This PHN is responsible for using professional knowledge and skills to demonstrate independent, self-motivated, and problem-solving consultation and anti-racism praxis skills on a wide range of child care health, safety, and policy-related topics at child care centers and family child care homes embedded in community contexts and systems. 
  • This PHN also will participate in a variety of community groups, coalitions, and advisory committees addressing the unique health and safety needs of children in child care and early learning settings so they might have more equity-driven opportunities to learn, develop, and be well. General Duties
  • Provide consultation and training to child care and early learning educators on a variety of health and safety issues for children.
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team, including Mental Health, Nutrition, and Educator Consultants to meet the needs of children and providers.
  • Develop anti-racist practices, with colleagues and community partners, that the team can implement based on community feedback to ensure program services and supports sow equity for children, families, and educators to have enhanced opportunities for health and well-being.
  • Collaborate with existing systems, and work to develop new ones, that attend to anti-racist work around access to equitably distributed resources for healthy development of young children. 
  • Assist with routine health screenings.• Provide expertise regarding public health nursing scope, practice, and policy at many levels following best practices.
  • Provide support services to clients that link/refer to equitable and necessary follow-up care, including other Health Department staff and community providers/partners, while assuring access and continuity of care.
  • Provide program planning, monitor local work plans, and assess progress toward educator and program goals.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities to meet laws, regulations (Washington Administrative Code), policies, and procedures. 
  • Provide training, orientation, and education to staff, clients, students, and the community around health, safety, and related topics as well as anti-racist practices.
  • As needed, address pandemic-related concerns for children, families, and providers.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

  • Washington State Registered Nurse License in good standing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing science or a graduate level nursing degree of MSN, DNP or PhD from an approved Washington State Nursing Commission accredited school of nursing
  • Current WA State Driver’s License or ability to travel to other sites within King County
  • Copy of current BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of public health nursing principles and processes; human systems; infectious disease management and control; and health care system structure and function. 
  • Knowledge of child and adult learning and health education techniques as well as principles. 
  • Knowledge of personal safety standards, safety techniques, and principles.
  •  Demonstrated ability to perform comprehensive nursing assessments and successfully engage clients in a plan of care. 
  • Demonstrated ability working in various community settings without on-site supervision; communicating effectively with patients and their families and with other health and human services staff; developing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with patients; and working with linguistically, culturally, and socio-economically diverse populations often facing harmful inequities.
  • Skills that are oriented toward attending to racism as a public health crisis and that can help the team to design, develop, and enlist anti-racist practices associated with young child health and well-being in systemic contexts, including child care and early learning educator communities.
  • Demonstrated ability providing community outreach and working with community partners and agencies, both in terms of child health and also in terms of collaborating to create anti-racist interventions and prevention efforts.
  • Demonstrated ability working independently in a fast-paced environment, multi-tasking, showing attention to detail, and providing crisis intervention with problem-solving and effective time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in areas of medical record documentation, following up on progress toward goals, and case management. 
  • Demonstrated organizational and leadership abilities. 
  • Ability to work with children, families, and child care providers via multiple methods, including in-person, virtually, and other communications formats. 
Desired Qualifications: 
Experience working with young children in child care, early learning, or school settings, especially those from birth to age 5.• Background in public health or community health.• Skilled in using information management systems and other health care technology.• Bilingual preferred.

Work Hours and Location: 
This position is Career Service, 1.0 FTE, hybrid position that requires onsite/in-person consultation in early learning settings in the Seattle area as well as virtual support and collaboration via remote telework as needed. Additionally, meetings, collaborations, and resources are based at our downtown Chinook Building office, located at 401 5th Ave in Seattle, WA. As needed, the position may be deployed to other Public Health Centers and sites throughout King County and deviate from the typical schedule.
