The Application Architect plays a lead role in developing the framework for a healthy ecosystem of platforms and applications that support the business needs of City departments and the constituents they serve. This position is a strategic planner, envisioning a future state of well-integrated systems and platforms that provide optimal outcomes. The Application Architect develops tactical plans to achieve the desired future state, working with IT and customer departments to formulate roadmaps that inform project plans, budgets and portfolio management activities.




Job Responsibilities

The architecture group in the Applications Division has a broad area of responsibility, ranging from solution architecture to the development of application lifecycle and portfolio management practices. The architecture team develops standards, tools and processes that are used across the division to improve outcomes for projects and operational work. As part of this team, the Application Architect will lead initiatives, participate on project teams, mentor other team members and supply unique expertise to grow the architecture practice.

The Application Architect will:

  • Champion an architecture practice group within the Applications Division, facilitating a team of highly skilled technologists from various domains of expertise to set standards and improve practices for application and solution architecture.
  • Create architecture documents and diagrams for specific applications and/or implementation projects that replace current systems or implement new functionality, applying knowledge of business goals, objectives and desired outcomes as well as advanced analysis and design skills to guide product implementation.
  • Lead in the application portfolio management practice area, creating and facilitating processes, templates, standards and performance metrics to improve portfolio and lifecycle management practices.
  • Advocate for critical initiatives in information technology, developing strategies for adoption of cloud technologies, migration from stand-alone systems to supported enterprise platforms, support for agile methodologies, and adoption of innovative processes.
The Application Architect will join a highly performing team, bringing key skills including: 

  • A passion to improve the architecture landscape of platforms and applications supported in the City of Seattle
  • General knowledge of multiple technical areas of architecture including security, networking, integration/middleware, database and application front ends.
  • Ability to quickly understand key business goals, objectives, constraints and anticipated future needs, and ability to propose secure and reliable solutions to meet these business needs.
  • Good communication style to influence decisions at many levels in the organization.
  • Ability to learn the strengths and weaknesses of newly emerging technology, identifying potential benefits and risks to the organization.
  • Understanding of software development methodologies (such as waterfall, spiral, agile, rapid prototyping, incremental, synchronize and stabilize, and DevOps).
  • Strong analytic skills to use data and metrics to measure and celebrate the accomplishments of our APM and ALM programs.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
NOTE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered for the required qualifications.


  • Minimum of seven years of experience in at least two IT solution development disciplines, including technical or application architecture, technical analysis, application development, security / risk assessment, middleware, or database management.
  • Bachelor’s or master's degree in computer science, information systems, business administration, related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience developing architecture blueprints, strategies, and roadmaps.
  • Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies, platforms and processing environments, and ability to provide technical direction to teams in these areas.
  • Good understanding of strategic and innovative technology trends, and the practical application of existing and emerging technologies to new and evolving business and operating models
  • Experience creating and delivering presentations to senior-level executives, technical and business audiences.
  • Experience managing an application portfolio, including portfolio data management, application planning and road mapping, incorporating software development lifecycle practices. and applying lifecycle management processes throughout the development, maintenance and retirement phases of applications.
  • Commitment to supporting a diverse and equitable working environment.
  • Outstanding communication, analytical, planning, organizational and technical skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Understanding of IT standards and controls.
  • Knowledge of different modeling languages (such as UML and ArchiMate).
  • Conversant with security requirements and assessments, preferably in a public sector setting.
  • Knowledge of IT service management (ITSM) and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL).

Additional Information

The full salary range for this position is $51.89  - $77.84 per hour. The salary for this individual role has been identified as $51.89 - $71.35 per hour.

Workplace Environment (Telework Expectation): This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. At this time, hybrid telework schedules have a minimum requirement of two days onsite per week. Individual schedules will be based on operational needs and agreement between the employee and their supervisor.
