Job Summary

Expert in hospital epidemiology principles and is responsible for the surveillance, analysis and reporting and prevention of healthcare associated infections; educating all healthcare providers, patients and families about infection control; and the development of health system policies and procedures to ensure rigorous infection control standards that meet Joint Commission, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Community Health Departments and Center for Disease Control (CDC) requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Leads investigations of unusual healthcare infection outbreaks, utilizing the microbiology laboratory, consults with infectious disease physicians, county/state health departments and, when necessary, with the CDC. Reports significant epidemiological findings as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with employee and occupational health services in the management of communicable disease and blood borne pathogen exposures.
  • Facilitates and conducts environmental rounds in all inpatient and outpatient care areas. Documents findings and works with manager/director on corrective actions.
  • Performs ongoing surveillance utilizing approved infection criteria, documentation and investigation of healthcare associated infections through admission diagnosis, microbiology culture results, isolation orders, patient records, consultation requests, autopsy findings and, when indicated, post-discharge surveillance.
  • Communicates and documents communicable disease information to public health agencies, department managers and physicians and maintains records of same.
  • Leads and coordinates quality improvement activities and utilizes research findings to advance the level of practice within the system.

    Provides expert consultation on infection control and prevention issues to other members of the healthcare system and community, e.g., bio-terrorism, pandemics and other public health threats as they arise.
  • Anticipates and assesses the educational needs of all healthcare personnel, patients, significant others.

    Develops and presents educational programs related to infection control and prevention issues.

Qualifications
  • Required Associate's Degree Nursing (Based on specific Spectrum Health entity or department, as appropriate)
  • Required Bachelor's Degree (Based on specific Spectrum Health entity or department, as appropriate)
  • Preferred Bachelor's Degree nursing, medical technology, or education related to epidemiology (Based on specific Spectrum Health entity or department, as appropriate)
  • Preferred Master's Degree healthcare related field (Based on specific Spectrum Health entity or department, as appropriate)
  • 2 years of relevant experience clinical experience Required
  • 3 years of relevant experience infection control Preferred
  • LIC-Registered Nurse (RN) - STATE_MI State of Michigan OR
  • CRT-Medical Technologist, Certified (MT) - ASCP American Society for Clinical Pathology OR
  • CRT-Infection Prevention and Control, Certified - CBIC Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc
