News - Night/Non-Daily Editor

 

The Green Bay Press-Gazette/greenbaypressgazette.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin, is seeking an editor to help elevate the journalism across our Wisconsin network.

 

The editor will guide night breaking news coverage across the Wisconsin network Tuesdays through Saturdays and will guide coverage of non-daily publications. This is a newsroom leadership position centered on collaboration with editors and reporters on the Wisconsin urgency team and in newsrooms across the state.

 

The ideal candidate will have a track record of sound news judgment, excellence in line editing, strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate with others in sometimes-stressful situations.

 

You will be well-versed in using metrics to inform coverage decisions, content formats and platform choices. He or she also will love to coach reporters, setting high standards, elevating the quality of our journalism and increasing audience engagement. The position helps shape and execute our strategic vision for digital subscription growth.

 

The night editor would collaborate with our reporters, coaches and visual team to strategically guide coverage and make sure the mix of content reflects our mission and audiences. You should understand and adapt to our audience, using our digital platforms to grow engagement with readers.

 

Responsibilities:   

 

  • Guides coverage decisions at night, working with urgency reporters and the Wisconsin Digital Optimization Team.
  • Communicates and coordinates with other editors, reporters and photojournalists when news merits it.
  • Leads the non-dailies team, working with reporters on digital coverage plans and planning print editions.
  • Conceptualizes stories, works with reporters to develop reporting plans and edits their work into a polished and engaging final form.
  • Fills in on nightly print oversight as needed.
  • Edits stories in all coverage areas as needed.
  • Guides journalists by consultation and coaching before, during and after the creation of content.
  • Identifies and addresses training needs of individuals and groups.
  • Collaborates with editors across the USA TODAY NEWORK in Wisconsin and beyond.
  • Monitors audience interests and habits for continuous improvement.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

 

Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor's or master’s in communications, journalism or an equivalent combination of education and experience. We will also consider candidates with strong internships.
  • Five years of professional and/or media management experience.
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • Devotion to peer-to-peer training, as both a teacher and student.
  • Strong news judgment and editing skills.
  • Comfort in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
  • Passion for empathetic, compassionate storytelling.
  • Commitment to detail, accuracy and fairness.
  • Ability to build a coverage strategy using analytics and innovation.
  • Experience with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of metrics, social media and SEO strategy.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Innovative, creative thinking that supports the company’s goals.
  • Ability to work extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly, when news requires it.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check.
