Summary: 

The Pediatric Patient Activity Coordinator (PPAC) is responsible for coordinating recreation based activities and supplies within the pediatric units at BCH, including but not limited to all communication and scheduling with outside visiting groups, coordination of theme days, special events and holiday celebrations, and communication with Public Affairs regarding any potential publicity events. The PPAC is also responsible for assisting the CL manager with oversight of toy/supply donations to BCH, acknowledgement of donors, and distribution of toy/supply donations to pediatric areas in the Baystate system. The PPAC is also responsible for oversight of inpatient tutor program as well as unit specific orientation of Pedi Pal volunteers and student ambassadors as well as regular assessment of volunteers to ensure adherance to unit practices. Additional responsibilities include assisting the Child Life Specialists in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating group and individual activities and interactions, and activity-related resources, for patients and their families in our care within the pediatric areas at Baystate Children's Hospital. The PPAC will provide developmentally appropriate, individualized play and recreational opportunities through collaboration with the patient, family, Child Life Specialists and health care team members and assists in maintaining a safe and organized environment. Activities will be facilitated on the indoor and outdoor Playdecks and at the bedside to support development, meet emotional needs and provide diversion in a safe and supportive way.
The PPAC is also responsible for promoting a family centered care environment in the healthcare setting, observing responses of children and families and reporting observations to the Child Life Specialist and/or the health care team. The choice of play outlets, approaches, and emotional support are built upon a solid understanding of child development and family systems. The Pediatric Patient Activity Coordinator functions as an integral partner of the Child Life & Healing Arts team and of the Health Care System.
The Pediatric Patient Activity Coordinator will become knowledgeable about Baystate Health System expectations, policies and procedures, and Core Values and will participate in ongoing education related to these expectations as needed. The Child Life and Healing Arts Manager is responsible for ensuring that the Pediatric Patient Activity Coordinator consistently meets the necessary behaviors.

Job Responsibilities: 

1) Works collaboratively with Child Life Specialists and the healthcare team to anticipate, coordinate, initiate, and respond to the recreational, diversionary and educational (school/in-house tutor) needs of individual patients and families. Assists patient/family when concerns are indentified and seeks assistance as necessary to advocate for patient/family needs outside of their scope.

2) Coordinates, implements and evaluates special events, theme days, outside visitors, holiday celebrations and all related supplies including communication with the above as well as with Public Affairs, Security and any other necessary resources for successful implementation.

3) Coordinates receipt of donations with outside donors, in collaboration with BHF and Public affairs when necessary, and ensures appropriate acknowledgement of donations. Coordinates screening, storage, organization and distribution of donations to pediatric areas at BCH. Helps in maintaining safe, clean and well-organized spaces for play including assisting with cleaning of toys, supplies and other play materials, and maintaining an ongoing inventory of supplies to support diversionary needs. Maintains equipment and environment and requests repairs/cleaning when needed and appropriate.

4) Unit specific orientation of Pedi Pal/Child Life volunteers, student ambassadors, HOP staff, Lucy's Love Bus program staff and additional unit based program personnel as needed along with regular assessment to ensure adherence to unit practices.
