Job Summary: The main function of the Associate Director of Staff Development for Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) and Health Information Management (HIM) is to serve as the instructional director for both the CDI and HIM departments, implementing Coding/CDI education initiatives for all coders and CDI to support Upstate’s mission.  Incumbent provides feedback to HIM and CDI leadership regarding opportunities for documentation improvement. Assist CDI Manager with the preparation of data and reports to evaluate the effectiveness and overall impact of the clinical documentation improvement program for presentation to the CDI Steering Committee and other appropriate oversight committees. Develops meeting agendas with CDI/HIM management to encourage CDI/Coder staff collaborative learning. Review final coding reconciliation disagreements for resolution of differences. Educates and mentors new coding and CDI Staff. Provides orientation plan, boot camp training which includes new topics in coding (inpatient and outpatient), CDI, chart review, reimbursement and regulatory changes. Identify trends and patterns in coding and documentation variances, monitor quality and provide education to ensure compliance with pertinent regulations and guidelines. Help to ensures all coding and CDI staff abides by the standards of ethical coding as set forth and updated by AHIMA and ACDIS. Performs quality audits of records for ICD-10-CM, CPT, and PCS, as well as MSDRG/APR assignment to ensure functions of the CDI and coding team are performed with a high degree of accuracy.
Minimum Qualifications:

Associates degree and 5 years of leadership experience in a healthcare related field or Bachelors degree and 3 years of leadership experience in a healthcare related field required. RHIT certification required by time of appointment. Advanced clinical understanding of disease processes required. Experience in training and education required. Organizational, communication skills, and computer literacy required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with a hospital inpatient coding department preferred. Experienced educator with a strong understanding of the requirements of clinical coding and billing according to the rules of Medicare, Medicaid and commercial payers preferred. Electronic medical record and chart review experience preferred. Broad clinical knowledge in an inpatient setting preferred. Experience working with a CDI improvement program preferred.
