Fire Marshal – Jim Simone

The fire marshal plays a critical role to protect the Bloomfield community from the devastation of fire. The Fire marshal is responsible for identifying potential fire hazards in a building.

A fire marshal also has the responsibility of ensuring that all the people in a building leave a building quickly and safely when a fire occurs.

Fire marshal duties vary including fire code enforcement or investigating fires for origin and cause. Fire marshals may be sworn law-enforcement officers and are often experienced firefighters. The fire marshal does the following.

  • Inspect buildings.
  • Reviews construction plans for safety and those will eventually occupy these spaces.
  • Evaluate and advise property owners the best way to maintain a safe space.
  • Conducts mandated inspections ensuring commercial spaces follow the Connecticut Fire Safety Code.

When a fire happens, the fire marshal investigates the scene of the fire to determined what, how and where the fire originated. This investigation may include searching for arson or any other criminal activity. Malfunctioning appliances or equipment may be included in the inspection.

The fire marshal helps by teaching our firefighters how to be more effective and observant of activities, senses, sights and sounds and what takes place at the scene of a fire.

Additional duties include:

  • Inspection of fireworks displays.
  • Issuance of permits for dangerous materials.
  • Inspection of all flammable and combustible liquids storage tank installations such as gas stations.
