Summary


Summary:
This Public Health Nurse works in close collaboration with members of the Healthcare for the Homeless, Emergency Preparedness, Environmental Health and CD/Imms Programs to oversee community vaccination clinics and participate in the Section’s response during vaccine preventable disease outbreaks. This position is based in the Chinook Building in Downtown Seattle however the majority of the time will be spent hosting vaccination clinics in non-traditional settings such as homeless villages, day centers, correctional facilities, encampments, and shelters throughout King County. The position reports to the Immunization Program Manager in the Communicable Disease Epidemiology & Immunization (CD/IMMS) Section of the Prevention Division.


Major program responsibilities:

  • Lead community vaccination clinics with a focus on vaccinating people experiencing homelessness and people who use drugs.
  • Provide programmatic input for the CD/Imms section’s vaccination strategy, including the implementation of vaccine processes in local correctional facilities and emergency departments.
  • Develop, update and maintain hepatitis A prevention program policies, procedures, and other documentation. E.g. related to vaccination, sheltering and lodging options for individuals with confirmed and suspected hepatitis A.
  • Participate in CD/Imms Section's response during vaccine preventable disease outbreaks and emergencies, as assigned and approved by the supervisor.


Specific responsibilities:
  • Lead on-site vaccination clinics with a focus on vaccinating people experiencing homelessness.
  • Supervision of immunization clinic operations and Public Health Medical Reserve Corps volunteers.
  • Travel to immunization clinics, transport vaccine and other supplies, and set-up/break-down equipment.
  • Maintain immunization clinic supplies and ensure appropriate storage and handling of vaccines.
  • Screen for and administer vaccines at (small-scale) community immunization clinics.
  • Provide situational health education and referrals/linkages to medical/specialty care.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with internal and external partners such as service providers serving persons experiencing homelessness, community health clinics, hospitals, and Department staff.
  • Participate in standardized evaluations of on-site clinic operations and overall vaccination strategy to identify areas for improvement.
  • Provide programmatic input and technical assistance for the CD/Imms section’s vaccination strategy, including the implementation of vaccine processes in local correctional facilities and emergency departments.
  • Conduct outreach and provide technical assistance for hospitals to vaccinate patients who are at risk for hepatitis A infection.
  • Coordinate with correctional facilities in King County to vaccinate incarcerated individuals on a routine basis.
  • Engage with organizations who serve persons living homeless to encourage vaccination.
  • Ensure equity concerns are addressed to minimize barriers to vaccine accessibility.
  • Develop, update and maintain hepatitis A prevention program policies, procedures, and other documentation. (E.g. related to vaccination, sheltering and lodging options for individuals with confirmed and suspected hepatitis A.)
  • Coordinate transport, isolation, and delivery of wraparound services for patients with hepatitis A who are living homeless and who do not require hospitalization while they remain infectious. Develop CD/Imms program policies and procedures associated with this task.
  • In collaboration with Department subject matter experts, explore the feasibility of various staffing models and train staff on motel and transportation procedures.
  • With colleagues, identify additional motels and shelters that can isolate patients with hepatitis A infection.
  • Participate in Section's response during vaccine preventable disease outbreaks
  • Participate in vaccine preventable disease outbreak response activities in collaboration with CD/Imms Section staff, as assigned, including but not limited to providing post-exposure prophylaxis, administering questionnaires,  ensuring safe storage and handling of vaccines and other supplies, ensuring adequate documentation of vaccinations/medications administered, and reviewing patient immunization histories.

Work hours and location: This is a full-time, term-limited temporary or special duty opportunity that is based in the Chinook Building which is located at 401 5th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104. However, this position does require the nurse to be able to mobilize quickly as well as have the ability to be flexible as the hours of work will be based on operational needs and this could include evenings and weekends. These positions are projected to last 1 year but can change based on need.

Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of vaccine preventable diseases and immunizations, public health nursing principles and processes, and infectious disease management and control.
  • Demonstrated experience administering vaccines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, be flexible, and manage multiple assignments in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out assignments and responsibilities reliably in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Ability to provide crisis intervention/de-escalation with high-risk and special needs populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out assignments and responsibilities reliably in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of protected health information at all times.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively communicate orally and in writing with supervisor, co-workers, healthcare providers, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide consultation and clinical support to health care providers and the community.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in community settings without on-site supervision with culturally and socio-economically diverse populations.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • Washington State Driver’s License or the ability to provide transportation to work locations with limited or no public transportation services is required.

Licensing/Certification Requirements:
  • Current Washington State Registered Nurse license in good standing.
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing science from a school of nursing accredited School of Nursing
  • Current Washington State Driver's License
  • Current CPR/BLS Certification for Healthcare Providers


Desired Qualifications:
  • Understanding of and familiarity with homeless services and affordable housing in King County
  • Training in or knowledge of harm reduction, motivational interviewing, trauma informed care, and street-based outreach
  • Two years clinical experience (inpatient or outpatient)
  • Master's degree in public health or related field
