Job Summary:

The Hospital Environmental Health and Safety Officer is responsible for The Upstate Healthcare System's code compliance and assists in the execution and implementation of policies applicable to both Federal and State guidelines for safety and quality assurance. Executes the policies established by the University Hospital Safety Committees as they relate to hazardous chemicals, fire safety and occupational safety. Performs managerial duties and oversees budget expenditures.

Respond to and remediate chemical, chemotherapy drug, hazardous materials spills.
Conducts safety inspections to ensure compliance and assess for hazardous conditions. Recommends remedial action as necessary. Performs regular (annual) assessment of institutional safety training needs through structured survey and information gathering processes, including the review of confidential employee incident and injury reports, Employee/Labor Relations grievances and Worker's Compensation cases. Develop, review and implement policies and procedures. Develops and presents regular safety training programs and coordinates the preparation of instructional materials (handouts, slides, overheads and publications.) Act as a liaison and prepare compliance reports for internal and external audits (DNV, PESH, etc.). Coordinates The Hospitals Environment of Care Safety Rounds Program. Active Member of the Safety Committees. Prepare and provide required monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports as defined by the Safety Committees, Hospital Administration and/ or the Director of Environmental Health and Safety Investigates work-related health and safety concerns and events (i.e., Indoor air quality/ odor, fire safety, general safety, etc.) through employee interviews and air and noise monitoring. Coordinates follow-up with EHS Management and Employee/Labor Relations. Perform risk assessments, provide guidance and ensure implementation of safety work practices. Coordinates the Hazardous material and waste program for the UUH-Community Campus (SDS, EPCRA, SPCC, Hazardous Waste). Coordinates the UUH-Community Campus sustainability/recycling efforts. Perform other tasks as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Chemistry, Biology or related and 5 years professional experience in environmental health and safety, hazardous waste and/or industrial hygiene plus excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) preferred. Knowledge and experience with NFPA, DEC, DNV, EPA and OSHA (NY DOL) regulations, excellent written and oral communication skills and computer-based records management experience preferred.

Work Days:

Mon-Fri, 7:30a-4:00p, On call/ recall and flexible hours based on departmental needs
