About this position

The Record-Journal seeks a versatile, experienced, City Editor to plan and supervise local news coverage for publication in print, online, and social media with an emphasis on digital-first coverage.

This role oversees the local newsroom, including both day-to-day beat reporting and longer-term in-depth and investigative coverage. The position supervises the Latino Communities Reporting Lab editor, providing specific coverage of our local Latino communities.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Plan and edit digital first content, email newsletters, and print content.

  • Ensure a smooth flow of stories to the website, newsletters, and social media channels throughout each day.

  • Manage investigative and in-depth content.

  • Supervise reporters, and the LCRL editor; including recruitment, retention, performance management, and employee development.

  • Act as a mentor to reporters; facilitate the development and improvement of key skills across core reporting and digital content creation.

  • Oversee multimedia coverage of city news.

  • Coordinate breaking news coverage 24/7.

  • Plan and edit stories for daily print editions.

  • Be available and responsive to readers and the general public.

  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Knowledge of the newspaper industry and at least 5 years of experience in reporting and/or editing.

Ability to use data to influence coverage and help create more content that we understand our audience is interested in.

Digital media savvy including SEO and social media.
