Summary

Metro Transit's Rail Division is responsible for operating and maintaining Link Light Rail service on a 20.4-mile route from the Angle Lake Station south of Sea-Tac Airport to the University of Washington Station, expanding to Northgate in early 2021. Plans and/or construction are underway extending the system to the north, east, south, and west.  Expansion over the next five years alone will include the addition of more than 20 stations and 40 miles of light rail track.  The light rail line is a critical part of the region's transportation network and carries more than 79,000 weekday daily riders.

Working as a member of a team, this position will perform regular and ongoing lead duties over Rail Facilities Custodians and maintain the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of Light Rail Operating Facilities.

Who May Apply:  This career service position is open to the general public. Additional consideration will be given to King County 587 Rail career service employees. This posting may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future Career Service (regular) vacancies, and/or TLT vacancies, and/or Special Duty Assignments (King County career service employees only) that may occur over the next twelve months.

Work Schedule:  This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. The workweek is normally 40 hours.   Work shift is subject to change and you may work a schedule of 4/10s or 5/8s depending on a seniority-based pick system.  A shift differential will be given for evening and graveyard shifts. NOTE: Current dayshift wage range: $28.88 2nd Shift: $30.32 3rd Shift: $31.05.

In addition to performing the full range of responsibilities of the Rail Facilities Custodian classification, incumbents in this classification will also perform the following duties:


• Prioritize, schedule and assign work for facility custodians; oversee
   and evaluate their work.
• Monitor the work-in-progress for Rail Facilities Custodians.
• Investigate and resolve citizen complaints. 
• Secure areas for safe cleaning.
• Clean the facility including shop areas, offices, hallways, surrounding surface areas, parking lot, stairways, elevators, and other portions of the facility.
• Mix and use cleaning chemicals and solutions.
• Strip, wash and scrub various types of floors, such as wood, linoleum, concrete and marble; vacuum and extract dirt from carpets; machine buff floors.
• Clean, stock and sanitize restrooms.
• Dust, wipe, wash and vacuum surfaces.
• Empty trash and recycle bins. Load and unload small equipment, debris and trash.
• Set up and arrange furniture for meetings and other events.
• Secure office and shop areas as directed.
• Operate pressure washers, blasters, and associated equipment.
• Prioritize emergency tasks in the absence of on-site supervision; respond to emergency calls as necessary.
• Plan, schedule and communicate activities with other trades and divisions; assist other trades as necessary.
• Request and stock various supplies.
• Clean glass and surface areas.
• Remove graffiti.
• Perform snow and ice removal.
• Operate company assigned vehicles.
• Perform other duties as required.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills


• Three year of professional cleaning/janitorial experience.
• One year of professional lead experience.
• Skill in providing leadership and direction to others.
• Skill in planning and coordinating work.
• Knowledge and skill of basic janitorial cleaning techniques.
• Experience operating and maintaining associated types of cleaning equipment.
Knowledge of basic safety rules and applicable OSHA laws.
• Knowledge in the proper use and disposal of cleaning chemicals.
• Basic oral and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to read, write, and follow verbal instructions.
• Skill in reading, following and safely handling cleaning supplies per manufacturer's instructions.
• Skill in dealing proactively and sensitively with customers.
• Skill in performing multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to perform repetitious job tasks.
• Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds.
•Skill in learning new methods and ways of doing work.
• Skill in problem solving; analytical skills required to solve common problems.
•Valid Washington State Driver's License.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:  Must be able to constantly lift, carry and move objects of less than 25 pounds and may be required to move heavier objects.  Assistance is available when lifting over 50 pounds.
