Description

Part-Time Technician, Bookstore works closely with the Bookstore Staff to serve customers, pull required textbooks for students, assist in processing, and shipping of online orders, answering phone calls, lifting boxes, stocking books and merchandise, and other duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Technical and clerical work in support of bookstore operations.
  • Perform general cashiering duties for the bookstore; operate a cash register including receiving payment.
  • Greet and assisting customers with purchases and provide information about products and procedures.
  • Assists with deliveries and counting merchandise.
  • Resolving problems related to shipments such as short, damaged and incorrect shipments.
  • Handling returns of shipments.
  • Stocking merchandise.
  • Processing and shipping online orders.
  • Answering and returning phone calls.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures when needed.
  • Create and maintain a variety of records, reports and files.
  • Fill-in for other employees as needed.
  • Assisting with inventory.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Working Conditions

Knowledge of:

  • Basic customer relations techniques and methods.
  • Basic principles of mathematics and accounting.
  • Procedures and practices involved with handling money, issuing receipts and balancing a cash drawer.
  • Basic principles and practice of purchasing and sales.
  • Advanced principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting. Modern office practices, procedures and equipment including a computer.
  • Various computer software programs; any knowledge of online shipping sites such as UPS is a plus. 
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation

 

Ability to:

  • Provide friendly customer service and answer questions about products.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Respond tactfully and courteously with the public in answering student inquiries and referring complaints.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Perform varied clerical work.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Operate and use modern office equipment including a computer.  
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Interpret and apply administrative and departmental policies, procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Receiving, unpacking and shelving new shipments of books.


 Environmental Conditions:

Bookstore/office environment; high levels of public contact; working closely with others. May work irregular hours.

Physical Conditions:

Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; excessive bending, lifting and carrying heavy supplies and materials, up to 50 lbs.

Scheduling Conditions:

This is a part-time, 12-month position, which requires the employee to be on campus. Day/Evening hours; Averaging 20-25 hours a week. Monday through Thursday, 8:00am – 6:00pm, and Friday 8:00am 12:00pm.

 Traveling Conditions:

 Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed. 

Experience and Training

Training: Minimum of one-year prior experience in customer service or retail operations required. Prior bookstore experience preferred. 

Experience: Associate's degree in business or related field required. Prior bookstore experience preferred.
