The Rapid City Journal, South Dakota's largest newspaper, is seeking a city editor, with high standards, strong organizational skills and a talent for mentoring and inspiring young journalists.

The ideal candidate will join a team that is taking an excellent newsroom to the next level. The editor will help to lead and mentor an enthusiastic and talented staff dedicated to telling the community's stories, from breaking news to big local events, from in-depth series and profiles to special projects, in new, creative and collaborative ways.

The Journal enjoys strong relationships with and support from many key local partners and institutions, and the editor will have regular opportunities to continue building those relationships and discovering new ways for the Journal to serve Rapid City, the Black Hills and South Dakota.

The successful candidate will have experience managing employees, developing talent, planning daily coverage and weekend packages and, most of all, editing great stories. The candidate will be knowledgeable in media law, uphold the highest standards of journalistic ethics and professionalism, be able to make sound decisions, and help reporters support the First Amendment through watchdog reporting.

The position also requires the ability to oversee and execute enterprise packages that work in print and online formats. The candidate must be self-motivated, ready to lead others, and have a passion for local news.

Rapid City is a scenic destination in the heart of America. Western South Dakota includes the Black Hills National Forest, Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, Wind Cave National Park, countless lakes, streams and outdoor recreation opportunities and the largest ski resort this side of the Rockies.

The Black Hills also holds claim to historic Deadwood, a relic of the Wild West and home to some of the best gaming resorts in the region. The nearby wide open spaces reflect that same Western flair as well. We have mild winters, gorgeous summers and great people.

The region is also bustling with opportunities to cover growth, development and systemic issues facing South Dakota. The area is home to Ellsworth Air Force Base-the future home of the U.S. Air Force's B21 Bomber. The Journal has launched a partnership with ICT (formerly Indian Country Today) to cover the area's Native American Tribes and communities. Rapid City is also in a region with a stable, growing economy, a high quality of life and countless more stories to cover.

The Rapid City Journal, and its website rapidcityjournal.com, is a division of Lee Enterprises. We offer an excellent pay plan and benefits package including medical, dental, vision, flexible spending, life insurance, 401K and a generous paid time off policy.
