Job Description:

Description of Duties:

Under the general direction of the Director for Pre-Award Services, manage all activities and personnel in the Research Administration unit. Responsibilities include: supervision of all Research Administrators; allocating workload and resources for the submission of all proposals; and oversight of post-award non-financial management activities related to projects.  The Assistant Director is responsible for the design and implementation of a cohesive and flexible research administrator team that supports the communication of University policies; fairly applies rules and regulations of all sponsors and the Research Foundation; supports and improves the proposal submission process; and develops and maintains streamlined processes to support the research community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervision of Research Administrators:  This includes providing training and direction on all applicable policies, procedures, federal and sponsor regulations; distributing and monitoring workload assignments; review and approval of employee vacation/sick leave requests; conducting performance reviews on an annual basis.
  • Proposal Submissions:  Oversight of all activity related to the submission of proposals including: the proposal intake process, review of solicitations, information related to cost sharing commitments, sub award documentation; review of the completed applications and proposed budgets to ensure accuracy and compliance with University and sponsor requirements; provide advice and guidance to faculty and departmental research administrators as needed during the proposal development process; obtain appropriate campus approvals; and ensure successful submission of the proposal..
  • Post-award non-financial activities:  Oversight of all activities related to the management of non-financial award actions including:  review of terms and conditions of incoming awards and amendments to ensure award provisions are compatible with University and Research Foundation policy; participate in the programmatic monitoring of awards, working closely with the sponsor, PI, department, post-award and other research related university offices throughout the life of a sponsored project.
  • Review all applicable policies and procedures for compliance and efficiency. Provide recommendations to the Director on policy updates or changes; educate the campus research community regarding all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of all federal and state regulations, sponsor regulations, Research Foundation policies and applicable University policies. 


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS from a college or university accredited by the US Dept. of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in research administration or related field
  • Highly service-oriented, team-oriented, and goal oriented, with great flexibility to identify priorities, manage and respond to competing deadlines and priorities
  • Ability to demonstrate professional composure, and maintain a collegial and friendly work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to be detailed oriented, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop policies and procedures to address identified needs and capacity building
  • Excellent collaborative skills, along with the willingness and ability to interact effectively with a diverse constituency
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required
  • Comfort with or adaptability to utilize a variety of information systems, as well as strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Must be self-directed, possess good judgment and problem-solving skills and be comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in Research Administration for a University, College, or a Research Organization.
  • CRA Certification
  • Experience with ORACLE, PreAward Compliance System


Additional Information:

Salary Range:  $85,000 - $90,000 DOE
