Summary


King County International Airport (KCIA) is looking for a new Environmental Scientist II. This position will be responsible for supporting the projects under the Environmental Program and the delivery of the Airport capital program for the division.

SCOPE OF JOB DUTIES: To be considered for this opportunity, you must, at a minimum demonstrate skill and ability to: 

  • Perform office and field studies and assess the potential impacts of construction, environmental improvement activities or other activities on natural resources.
  • Evaluate previous studies; examine field conditions; measure properties of natural phenomena such as wetlands, streams and rivers and/or geologic materials; identify issues and concerns; resolve contradictory data sources; diagnose natural conditions; and predict the future behavior of natural resources.
  • Prepare and Present technical documents, maps, conclusions, and presentations for use by technical staff, Airport management elected officials, and the public.
  • Participate with other professional staff in identifying and implementing appropriate solutions to problems related to the position’s discipline.
  • Review and recommend approval of site development plans for compliance with appropriate codes for small projects.  Investigate code violation complaints.
  • Provide scientific consultation to engineering and planning functions; consult on preparation of environmental reviews such as Environmental Impact Statements.
  • Participate in leading small-scale projects involving research in the applicable scientific disciplines; assist in management of budget, schedule, and quality.
  • Effectively apply Project Management industry standards and practices in the areas of project planning, management, and delivery aligned with the Airports Project Management Manual.
  • Work with the Capital Program Manager and the Airport management team to refine project and program-level performance metrics. 
  • Work cross-sectionally to support the Airport’s community engagement and outreach activities including project reporting, more robust digital communication and partnering with community-based organizations to co-develop collaboration and educational opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned under the Environmental, Strategic Climate Action, and Asset Management Programs.
    1. Train, assist and direct work of less-experienced staff.
    2. Develop scientific monitoring equipment, methods and plans.
    3. Use computer software to perform calculations and store and track data.
    4. Refine standard process for identifying, developing, and prioritizing CIP needs across the portfolio.

WE ARE LOOKING CANDIDATES WHO:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant principles and practices of the applicable environmental, ecological or other related sciences; relevant mathematics equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and basic knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory requirements for assigned projects such as environmental or land development regulations.
  • Proficient in researching, data collection, using statistical analysis, analyzing/interpreting technical data and reporting results that clearly communicates technical information (oral and written) to a variety of stakeholders, engages the audience and tells the Airport’s story.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of small-project management techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental monitoring approaches.
  • Skill in interpreting plans, specifications, drawings and technical maps and documents.
  • Skill in applying principles of customer service and continuous quality improvement.
  • Skill in promoting mutual respect and acceptance of all workers in a diverse work group.  Is a champion for Equity & Social Justice.
  • Meeting, planning and facilitation skills, including setting agendas, leading productive work sessions, facilitating crucial conversations, and capturing and disseminating outcomes.
