General Definition of Work

Performs semi-skilled work in the general maintenance of transit buses, equipment and facilities, and related work as apparent or assigned.  Work is performed under the supervision of the Crew Leader - Maintainer and Lead Mechanic. This position is classified as an essential position during designated planned or unplanned events.
The position also involves performance of safety-sensitive functions as defined by 49 CFR Part 655, as amended.

Hiring Bonus offered:

  • 1st Bonus - $250 received three (3) months after initial hire date
  • 2nd Bonus - $250 received upon completion of probation – this is in addition to the standard $250 probationary bonus
  • 3rd Bonus - $250 received nine (9) months after initial hire date
Total bonus including standard probationary bonus - $1,000

Note: $2.00 shift differential

Essential Functions

  • Washes bus exteriors using automated wash equipment details transit vehicles seasonally.
  • Cleans bus interiors; changes fare box vaults.
  • Fuels vehicles in the designated areas, checks and fills fluid levels of transit vehicles as required.
  • Notifies transit mechanics of any issues with fleet vehicles including leaks, new damage, safety concerns, etc.
  • Park's fleet on the lot and in the parking area in an orderly fashion.
  • Maintains immediate work area and grounds; performs minor maintenance and repairs to the automated washer.
  • Maintains and Orders supplies as needed; maintains records and documents as required.
  • Cleans bodily fluid spills and cleans/treats bloodborne spills.
  • Assists in the training of new staff members.
  • Complies with regulations governing the handling and disposal of hazardous waste and personal protection.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


General knowledge of the operation and routine cleaning requirements of transit passenger buses; general knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing passenger bus operations on public streets; general knowledge of routine maintenance and repair work and of the use of common hand tools; skill in the safe operation of passenger buses and the automated wash facility; ability to perform manual labor; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
 
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the maintenance and operation of large automotive equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a satisfactory driving record.
 A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position.   Drug and alcohol testing guidelines as set forth by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration will be followed during the employment period

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and pushing or pulling and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to vibration and exposure to Bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic.
