The Husky Union Building (HUB) serves as the center of the UW community life and complements the student experience through an extensive variety of cultural, educational, social, and recreational programs. These programs provide the opportunity to balance course work and free time in the Husky Experience.

The HUB has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director for Facilities, Operations and Special Projects. This position will provide leadership and direction for the management of the HUB’s 275K square foot physical environment including facilities maintenance, custodial services, space planning, safety and security, receiving, and renovation projects. Oversees facility strategic planning initiatives. Lead major departmental special projects and initiatives to support 45 full-time staff, 125 student employees, and more than a dozen UW departments housed within the HUB.

Promising candidates will possess a deep understanding of and passion for how student union facilities best support student success. The individual should enjoy working with students, have a creative approach to their work, show an ability to be a leading and contributing member of a team, manage projects and people with the highest level of integrity, display an attention to detail, and have a proven track record of developing and executing a vision. This position interacts with department staff and students on all initiatives related to the HUB’s physical space. This position reports to the Director and serves as a member of the Leadership Team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilities Operations & Services
  • Plan, develop, and manage implementation of goals and objectives for facilities operations.
  • Building Coordinator - primary contact regarding daily facilities response and ongoing projects.
  • Responsible for a facilities operational budget totaling more than $1.25 million.
  • Through supervision of Facilities Maintenance Manager, direct the development and execution of custodial services and maintenance programs, including but not limited to:Preventive maintenance program;
  • Reactive and emergency maintenance response;
  • Daytime, night shift, and weekend custodial operations;
  • Furniture, fixtures, and equipment inventory renewal, replacements, and upgrades;
  • Facility renewal and upgrade project management.

  • Manage operational integration of new equipment including warranty process management, preventive maintenance and life-cycle planning, and specialty systems coordination.
  • Coordinate the Capital Improvement Capital Cost Recovery projects for the HUB.
  • Liaison with campus departments in pursuit of facility management services and ensuring cost-effective and consistent maintenance service on a daily basis.
  • Leased Operations Coordinator and liaison serving as primary contact with UW Real Estate Office and tenants on contract agreements, negotiated terms, and operational support.
  • Manage facilities assessments and data collection, including updates to professional association bench-marking, semi-annual administration of the Skyfactor survey, and daily traffic counts.
  • Lead the One HUB neighborhood program in support of all offices within the building.

    Safety and Security
  • Health and Safety Coordinator, overseeing emergency planning and response.
  • Develop and maintain Husky Ready Plan, Emergency Response protocols, Continuity of Operations Plan, and ongoing training initiatives.
  • Primary safety & security resource for HUB tenants and operations first responder to incidents.

    Special Projects
  • Plan, implement, and direct departmental special projects including strategic facility-related initiatives, guest engagement programs, and process improvement efforts.
  • Co-Chair the Student Staff Development Team and the student employee education experience.
  • Coordinate and oversee the department’s assessment efforts: gathering and analysis of data regarding the student and customer experience to inform programmatic efforts.
  • Update, maintain, interpret, and enforce department policies.
  • Maintain historical records for the Husky Union Building.
  • Serve as an ex-officio member of the HUB Board of Representatives and act as the recorder.

    Supervision
  • Identify, articulate and model values and behaviors that support an organizational culture characterized as positive, productive and committed to serving students.
  • Provide leadership and support to 3 direct reports and their teams including the Facilities Maintenance Manager, HUB Games r, and the Student Organization Resource Center Manager. Indirect supervision of 12 full-time classified maintenance and custodial staff and 15-25 student staff.
  • Co-Supervise the Student Building Managers, developing a positive and educational experience for the students responsible for the HUB during nights and weekend.

    Department Executive Leadership
  • Member of the Director’s Executive Leadership Team engaged in department-wide decision making regarding strategic planning, budgeting (overall $6M budget), and policy development/interpretation/enforcement.
  • Co-Leads one of the department’s strategic planning activation teams.
  • Responsible for all sub-units and staff managers under the Facilities unit.
  • Ex-Officio member of the HUB Board of Representatives.
  • Represent the Department on various community and University committees and direct or serve on Department committees and teams.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree preferred.

    Five years of professional facilities operations administrative experience or related, including three years of facility management that demonstrates ability to be successful in several of the following areas:
    •Management of daily building operations and maintenance
    •Management of facilities safety programs and emergency response
    •Employing a variety of facility cleaning methods, equipment and products
    •Maintaining facilities with a blend of old and new construction
    •Comprehensive facility construction and renovation
    •Sustainability
    •An understanding of facility management national trends and current best practices
    •Management of in-house and contracted projects

    Demonstrated skills in the following areas:
    •Financial forecasting, budgeting, and reporting related to facility management
    •Supervising professional, service and trades staff
    •Working in a community-like environment where customers are actively sought for input
    •Speaking in front of small and large audiences in presentation and training venues
    •Communicating clearly in writing through email, written correspondence and reports
    •Fostering teamwork and diversity
    •Strategic and solution-oriented management
    •Creating partnerships and working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders

    Ability to lift 50 lbs.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

    Desired:
    Experience working in the fields of Higher Education and College Unions is preferred.
