The Loudoun Times-Mirror and its website, LoudounTimes.com, is seeking its next editor-in-chief to lead a small, talented and tenacious newsroom based in Leesburg, Virginia. The Times-Mirror is the longest-serving media source in Loudoun County, part of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan statistical area. The newspaper consistently earns some of the highest honors in the Virginia Press Association contest, taking home the all-encompassing News Sweepstakes honor in 2019 and Best News Presentation in 2018. The weekly print edition carries a circulation of more than 32,000, while the website saw more than 2.9 million readers in 2020.

Job responsibilities

-Lead a five-person newsroom to produce impactful, engaging local stories every day for LoudounTimes.com and the weekly Loudoun Times-Mirror print edition.

-Monitor and track reporter production and help them in developing both short- and long-term news pieces. Serve as the final set of eyes on all stories before they're published.

-Work to grow readership while maintaining a high level of journalism, ethics and professionalism.

-Write editorials and solicit community feedback (letters to the editor, community views, local columns) with Loudoun County residents. Engage with the local community.

-With the help of the community editor, plan and produce a quarterly lifestyle magazine, Loudouner, as well as a biyearly Loudoun Homes special section. Reporters contribute stories for these publications.

-Oversee all of the Times-Mirror's social media accounts, updating them multiple times a day and sending out daily email alerts with the day's leading stories.

-Serve as the face of the Times-Mirror newsroom, leading by example and spreading the message of journalism's impact on the local community.

Qualifications

-A minimum of five years' experience in a fast-paced news environment. Preference may be given to candidates with more experience.

-Versed in news writing and AP style. Must hold a core belief in honest, objective reporting. Strong ethics and understanding of the newspaper's role in the community is essential.

-Degree in journalism, media studies, communications or related field.

-Editor experience strongly preferred, but robust reporting and general newsroom experience could be a substitute.

-Basic familiarity and experience with major social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
