Summary


The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (PAO) is seeking an experienced paralegal to join our team in the Economic Crimes Unit (ECU) of the Criminal Division. The ECU handles all levels of economic and property crimes committed throughout King County with an emphasis on legally and factually complex and complicated cases. Our paralegal positions include an independent and active role as part of a collaborative team dedicated to justice. The most competitive candidates will have the ability to exercise sound judgment, have strong attention to detail, experience with a high-volume caseload, and embrace a culture of learning in a dynamic environment.

This is a Special Duty/ Term Limited Temporary assignment funded by COVID-8 relief money, subject to funding approval by King County central budget office and Council. We expect that the assignment will last until June of 2023 with the possibility of an extension.

Work Location: 
In person/telecommuting hybrid: King County Courthouse – 516 Third Ave, Seattle.


The PAO requires for all employees to reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their primary county worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.     

Work Schedule:  This position works a 35-hour work week schedule, normally Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  This position is eligible for King County’s generous benefits package and is covered by the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.


Salary:  Range 49  
Step One: $30.6775- Step Ten: $38.8857 Hourly (35-hour work week)*
$2,146.90 - $2,721.60 Biweekly
$4,651.62 - $5,896.80 Monthly
$55,819.40 - $70,761.60 Annually 

A general wage increase of 4.5% is anticipated later in the year following ratification of the tentative agreement between King County and the Coalition of Unions.   


Union Membership: Positions in this classification are represented by Teamsters Local No. 117.

*Employees with less than 2 years of service will receive .25 per hour less than the hourly salary table due to a mandatory contribution toward the Teamsters Pension Trust that was voted by members of Teamsters Local No. 117.  
 

Job Duties

This paralegal position supports Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys (DPAs) who have vertically managed, high-volume caseloads. Providing support to these three DPAs gives this paralegal position the chance to be involved with every stage of the case, from pre-filing to post-sentencing motions practice.
 
The paralegal will be expected to:

  • Prepare, generate, process, and coordinate service of legal documents, including subpoenas.
  • Maintain case management system (Prosecutor by Karpel – PbK) to reflect updated witness information, court dates, discovery dissemination, trial and disposition information, and any other important information that needs to be documented.
  • Manage discovery: Organize, index, scan, Bates stamp, redact, and prepare voluminous amounts of materials for dissemination that are received in various hard and electronic formats. 
  • Prepare Subpoenas Duces Tecum and Special Inquiry Judge documents, including arranging proper service and filing, and managing the documents received.
  • Assist detectives/prosecutors with processing search warrants per PAO policy.
  • Assist prosecutors in all phases of trial preparation.
  • Create trial exhibits, redact video and audio recordings, and request and monitor transcript requests. 
  • Serve as a liaison with deputy prosecutors, victim advocates, interpreters, law enforcement officers, defense attorneys, defense investigators, court personnel, witnesses, victims, and other partner agencies.
  • Notify/inform victims, witnesses, and law enforcement of case status; coordinate witness testimony; review and interpret legal documents and explain legal procedures; schedule interviews with attorneys and witnesses; and arrange travel and lodging accommodations for witnesses as needed.
  • Perform related work as required.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Must possess excellent organizational skills, have a high attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service in communications with people of diverse backgrounds, including victims, witnesses, law enforcement, and the public in a tactful, diplomatic, patient, and professional manner.
  • Must be receptive to instructions, feedback, and coaching.  
  • Ability to use independent judgment, exercise initiative, anticipate needs, and respond appropriately.
  • Demonstrates strong discernment skills in using discretion when working with confidential information.  
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to make decisions and initiate action.
  • Proven time management skills to effectively and accurately handle multiple tasks within short deadlines.
  • Desire and aptitude to learn new concepts, programs, and software on the job.
  • Knowledge of legal office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive), Adobe Pro; familiarity with Prosecutor by Karpel (PbK), KC Script, JABS, SAW/FORS, JBRS, PeopleMap/Accurint and other criminal justice programs is a plus.
  • Knowledge of the legal system; possession of paralegal skills, knowledge of legal terminology and application of laws, rules, and regulations, specifically in the criminal justice system.
  • Any combination of experience/education/training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.  
  • Be receptive to instructions, feedback, and coaching.  
  • Must have demonstrated predictable, reliable and timely attendance.  
  • Active participation in PAO equity work, attending equity trainings and discussions. Provide support for the Equity and Social Justice policy and principles and work with PAO colleagues and management to identify opportunities for improvement requisite.
