Public Health's Prevention Division is looking for an interviewer/recruiter Disease Research and Intervention Specialist for their Medical Monitoring Project (MMP). The primary purpose of this position is to recruit and interview people sampled for this project. The Medical Monitoring Project is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and implemented by state and local health departments to monitor clinical, socio demographic, and behavioral characteristics of a random sample of adult with diagnosed HIV. (https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/statistics/systems/mmp/).  People sampled for MMP are contacted by MMP staff and invited to participate in a one-time 60-75 minute interview.  The project also reviews medical records of the interviewed participants, and the person in this position will also assist in this task. Findings from MMP are used to improve services for people with HIV and inform HIV prevention strategies.

 WHO MAY APPLY: This position is Career Service. It is open to all qualified applicants.

 WORK SCHEDULE: After a standard full time daytime schedule training period for two or three weeks (Monday to Friday 8:30 to 5:00 pm), this position requires substantial evening and weekend work. The exact schedule is flexible, the preferred hours --0.75 FTE (30 hours a week) --are 1 pm  to 7:30pm Thursday through Monday.  Additional hours may be possible, depending on funding and the selected applicant’s availability.
 
 At Seattle/King County Public Health we strive to be accessible to those we serve. This position may require flexibility to accommodate different work schedules and work locations.
 
 WORK LOCATION: This position will primarily work at the Chinook Building and other Public Health Sites as needed. Some of the work associated with this position will be performed remotely, at least through July 5, 2021 in compliance with King County’s telecommuting mandate. It is possible that the work will be primarily performed remotely on an ongoing basis after July 5, 2021.  Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.  Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite.  Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.

Job Duties

  • Recruit sampled adults by mailing letters, making cold-calls, and sending text messages. 
  • Screen potential participants for eligibility and obtain informed consent. 
  • Conduct in-depth, standardized surveys with participants. 
  • Maintain detailed records in multiple locations/systems. 
  • Follow strict data security and confidentiality protocols. 
  • Participate in MMP trainings and required Public Health trainings. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Ability to work independently and to self-motivate to meet project goals and deadlines. 
  • Enthusiasm for and ability to approach strangers and quickly build rapport. 
  • Ability to strictly adhere to detailed protocols. 
  • Ability to comply with strict protocols for data security and confidentiality. 
  • Strong attention to details and accuracy. 
  • Accomplishes tasks in a timely manner. 
  • Basic knowledge of HIV-related issues and medical terminology. 
  • Ability to establish trust with people of varying sexual orientation & gender identities, racial/ethnic backgrounds, and socioeconomic status. 
  • Strong oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to learn and work within specific computer databases. 
  • Ability to ask strangers difficult questions on difficult topics: e.g., sexual abuse/assault, physical / psychological abuse, mental health, substance abuse. 
  • Have persistence in the face of rejection and non-response.
  • Basic to intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products, including Excel and Word (skills will be tested).
 
 Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in conducting structured or research interviews. 
  • Experience with HIV. 
  • Experience with medical terminology and medical records. 
  • Experience working with diverse communities, including sexual and gender minorities, people who inject drugs, people living homeless, and other disadvantaged persons
  • Fluency in Spanish or another language people living with HIV may use (e.g. Vietnamese, Amharic, Tigrinya)
