Job Title: Veterans Upward Bound Academic Advisor

Immediate Supervisor: VUB Project Coordinator

Job Summary: This position will be based in the Charleston and Huntington, WV areas. Extensive travel is required. Enroll military veterans in comprehensive program to facilitate transition into postsecondary study. Provide individual, personal and academic advising. Coordinate VUB classroom activities in outreach locations. Compile individual participant files that document eligibility, services, and progress. Time commitment is 12 months, part-time (approximately 24 hours per week).

Duties: Locate, certify eligibility of, and enroll project applicants; provide personal, academic, and career advice; maintain records of contacts with participants; monitor academic progress; facilitate participant career search and assessment; provide assistance in evaluating postsecondary need; assist in postsecondary selection and admissions process; assist in financial aid search and applications; make referrals to other agencies for supplemental support services; track progress of students in postsecondary; attend professional meetings and training seminars; and other responsibilities as assigned by Director or Project Coordinator.

Education/Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Sciences, Humanities, or related field. One year previous work experience teaching and/or counseling required. Prefer background similar to population served - low-income, first-generation college student, Appalachian, and military veteran. Must have strong social skills, be able to work independently, be a self-starter, manage resources and people, and have some knowledge base about postsecondary schools and military veteran benefits.
