Athletic Director

Requirements and Experience: Bachelor's degree required with a minimum of five years’ experience managing all aspects of athletic activities.

Job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Develops and maintains a District-wide athletic program to ensure uniformity, coordination, gender equity, and compliance.
  • Develop an athletic program handbook and update annually.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of athletic administration as it relates to secondary schools.
  • Fosters good community relationships by keeping the community aware of and responsive to athletic program.
  • Prepare and submit to the Superintendent a yearly budget, including ancillary personnel and costs for the total athletic program.
  • Order admission tickets and schedules.
  • Deposit all athletic fund receipts following the guidance and procedures of the business office.
  • Prepare a financial report and an end-of-year report for each contest for which admission is charged and an annual financial report for the athletic program.
  • Prepare requisitions for payment of game personnel and officials.
  • Coordinate and oversee the athletic budget subject to final authority of the Superintendent.
  • Provide complete schedules of the upcoming season to news media, booster clubs, opponents, school personnel, etc.
  • Arrange for the advertising of events through the news media.
  • Work with the news media, students, faculty, and community to boost the image of the district.
  • Attend parent meetings run by the head coach of each sport at the beginning of each season to help answer questions.
  • Attend meetings of the YAIAA and District III PIAA when requested but the high school principal and keep abreast of all league and PIAA developments.
  • Provide information concerning league correspondence to the Superintendent in a timely manner.
  • Schedule practice sessions and exhibition events in accordance with PIAA rules and coordinate same with the school calendar.
  • Collect officials 'evaluations from coaches after each event and route to the Executive Director of the YAIAA.
  • Oversee transportation to all away scheduled athletic events with the transportation coordinator.
  • Oversee the execution of school contracts, official's contracts, and eligibility lists.
  • Secure and execute official PIAA forms.
  • Arrange for medical exams for students participating in interscholastic sports for grades 7 through 12.
  • Secure officials, ticket takers, ticket sellers, police, and other game personnel.
  • Arrange for attendance of physician and ambulance at football games and for medical contacts at all other athletic events.
  • Arrange for collecting and filing records of all sports events, including such items as scorebooks, eligibility statements, and other pertinent data.
  • Keep all individual and team records current.
  • Consult with field maintenance personnel and custodial staff regarding athletic venue preparation, care and maintenance.
  • Provide athletic awards at all levels and periodically review the process.
  • Meet with the coaching staff to discuss problems/concerns relating to their sports as needed.
  • Attend all home athletic events or delegate this responsibility to a designee.
  • Meet periodically with principals for program coordination, clarification of potential problem areas, and performance and evaluation of athletic events.
  • Implement an evaluation system that will improve coaches' performance and enhance the athletic program.
  • Maintain a current inventory of athletic equipment and supplies for each sport.
  • Recruit, interview, screen for employment, manage, and evaluate all athletic personnel, including coaches, game managers and game employees.
  • Process athletic injury insurance forms.
  • Oversee the weekly cocurricular eligibility reports from all teachers and send letters to parents of students who are on probation or who are ineligible.
  • Collect code of conduct forms from each athlete.
  • Work collaboratively with head coaches to evaluate assistant coaches' work performance.
  • Submit to the Superintendent by September 1st of each year, the financial report for the cocurricular booster clubs.

  • Must be able to speak clearly and distinctly; be able to read correspondence/computer screen; and have an auditory sufficient to communicate via phone.
  • Must be courteous, congenial, cooperative, service-oriented, able to work independently or in a team (as circumstances warrant), and able to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time; walk throughout buildings; climb stairs; lift/carry at least 20 pounds; and bend, twist, reach, stoop, grasp, and have sufficient dexterity to operate office equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with students, personnel at all levels, and members of the public; follow written and verbal directions; provide direction and motivate peers; read and comprehend at an advances level; perform complex computations; write/correspond clearly, concisely, and effectively at a post-secondary level; work independently or in a team; interpret and follow district policies, regulations, and work rules; and exercise good judgement.
