The IT Intern is an entry level role responsible for providing, with guidance, IT services and support to enhance departments’ operational efficiencies, patient safety and departmental workflow needs.  The expectation for this position would be to gain experience and abilities required for an IT role in a healthcare organization.  Under direct supervision, the IT Intern responsibilities include:

  • Participates, with guidance, in needs assessment, software design, development, implementation, support, and reporting.
  • Assists with data collection from subject matter experts, to facilitate design which will represent an improved system workflow.
  • Assists with the design of system workflow in conjunction with clinical and business partners; workflows will focus on improved efficiencies, as well as incorporating quality initiatives.
  • Provides desktop or technical support.
  • Participates in change management activities to support successful system deployments and enhancements.
  • Participates in unit and integrated testing of the software to ensure that the design objectives are met.
  • Assists with the development of end-user training materials and supports training efforts. 
  • Assists other team members in ensuring good documentation standards; including the creation of functional design specifications.
  • Provides input into escalation of issues with appropriate internal resources.
  • Assists in the development of policies and procedures in collaboration with clinicians, business personnel, other team members, and IT manager.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of system documentation.
  • Works tickets assigned through the Service Desk ticket tool.
  • Troubleshoots issues with vendor assistance, to resolution.
  • Supports/troubleshoots Hospital Information Systems inbound/outbound interfaces as appropriate.
  • Creates reports as needed and works problem tickets. 
  • Works with other application analysts to insure system integrations.
  • Utilizes and maintains appropriate change control procedures and standards.
  • Prepares detailed flowcharts/diagrams to assist with design decisions and problem analysis.
  • Rotates to various IT teams for exposure and experience. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

*This role may encounter Protected Health Information (PHI) as part of regular responsibilities.  UH employees must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain PHI for our patients.  Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Active college student or graduate with a degree in any of the following, or comparable: Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Management, Healthcare- related degree, Programming, Engineering, preferred.

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented and organized, with good analytical and problem solving ability. 
  • Notable client service, communication, and relationship building skills required.  
  • Ability to work in hospital clinical and office areas where patient safety and confidentiality are core values required.
  • Must have reliable transportation and be flexible to work varying shifts.

Special Skills & Equipment Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated ability to use PCs, Microsoft Office suite, and general office equipment (i.e. printers, copy machine, etc.) required.
