Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION(S): Provide catalog access to library materials and make them available for use by the College.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cataloging operations:

Identify and verify library materials that are part of the Dewey collection, comparing the item in hand to the appropriate bibliographic description. Create new records for library materials not found in the WorldCat database according to OCLC requirements and download edited records to the Five College online library catalog.

Maintain accurate and consistent records in accordance with Smith and Five College cataloging decisions: edit item records, add volumes and copies, update contents and holdings information, and withdraw items as required. Add materials into inventory management system and evaluate the condition of materials for preservation triage. Resolve problems and ensure consistency in processing the Dewey collection.

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

2 years of post-secondary education plus 2 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience; library cataloging experience or coursework strongly preferred.

Skills:

Strong organization, problem solving, and communication skills; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; ability to apply complex procedures and to organize and prioritize work effectively; attention to detail. Familiarity with cataloging database and standard office software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Push & pull book trucks/carts and trays

Lift and carry 35 lbs regularly

This is a temporary, non-benefited position. We are looking to hire for a total of 35 hours per week and are open to hiring either two part-time or one full-time cataloger(s).
