POSITION SUMMARY:

The Learning Designer promotes and supports the use of digital technology and provides services that facilitate the integration of technology into teaching and learning activities across the curriculum. Those technologies include Canvas, Zoom, Panopto, Kaltura, mobile technologies, virtual reality, 3D printing and other closely related products and services. The Learning Designer serves a critical campus role at Emporia State University, ensuring online and hybrid course quality assurance and accessibility compliance.

POSITION DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND COMPETENCIES

  • Learning Design (50%): The Learning Designer works collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students to provide expertise in design, development, and delivery of high-quality learning experiences – particularly those delivered online and hybrid formats.
    • Ensures online and hybrid course quality using the Quality Matters framework.
    • Ensures course accessibility using utilities such as UDOIT and Blackboard Ally.
    • Writes effective copy, instructional text, and audio and video scripts.
    • Devises modes of evaluation and assessment to measure the instructional effectiveness.
    • Plans and manages projects using project management methodology and tools.
    • Provides support for creation of materials used for instruction.
    • Maintains currency regarding advances in learning design and Human Performance Improvement.
    • Researches and evaluates emergent technologies and their applications.
    • Assists in development and maintenance of a dynamic Learning Technologies website.
    • Integrates new and emergent technology into the curriculum, including virtual, augmented, and mixed reality.
    • Develops documentation, tutorials, narrated video demonstrations and other training resources to support faculty, staff, and students.
  • Professional Development and Support (25%): Delivers professional development for faculty, staff, and students in the area of digital and emergent technology through facility tours and demonstrations, hands-on short courses, remote web conferencing, and online self-paced professional development opportunities.
    • Designs and delivers individual and online professional development for faculty and students.
    • Designs and maintains document library e.g. handouts, videos, and other resources.
    • Provides departmental tours and demonstrations for various technologies as needed.
    • Provides student support for various emergent technology projects.
  • Community Engagement & Involvement (15%): Initiates collaboration models to foster sharing of experiences and ideas in the field of learning design both inside and outside of the university.
    • Promotes Learning Technologies research and development activities through a variety of professional organizations and conferences, including EDUCAUSE ELI, Colleague to Colleague (SIDLIT), CHECK, Podstock, MACE, and through online organizations and communication channels.
    • Assists in maintaining social media presence.
    • Assists in research and scholastic writing opportunities.
    • Pursues grant and other external funding opportunities.
    • Assists in leading a variety of professional development activities for ESU faculty, staff, and students, including i3 innovation grants; TellYourStory (micro-conference); Embedded Instructional Design, etc.
  • Team Operations & Service Management (5%): Provides support for IT operations, including portfolio and project management for designing, delivering, managing and improving learning technologies based on ITIL.
  • Special Skills and Abilities (5%): Provides support for accessibility, usability, and experience design, information design and communications, as well as knowledge of instructional design models, strategies, and best practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Minimum of a master's degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Information Technology or Digital/Multimedia. Doctoral degree preferred.

Preferred Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A minimum of 3 years experience in curriculum design, e-learning, and/or online course development.
  • Online teaching experience.
  • Outstanding customer service - preferably in higher education.
  • Experience in preparing and presenting reports and/or presentations.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of a learning management system (Canvas preferred), graphic and multimedia authoring software, and website design.
  • Possession of a valid Kansas driver’s license and/or able to provide own transportation in conduct of work assignments

Other Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel in Emporia and Kansas as required.
  • Able to lift/maneuver and/or install equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. independently or with assistance.
  • Must able to stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, reach, twist, sit, and walk.
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings when required.

COMPENSATION:

  • Starting Salary $48,500.00
