Summary

King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks seeks Community Outreach and Engagement interns! This is an exciting opportunity to connect with members of our community and shape projects within the Park's division related to solar lighting, structure improvements, safety and more!

Participants in this internship opportunity will contribute to shaping their professional development connected to established best practices in community outreach and engagement in the service of King County capital project development and execution. As an Intern with the Community Engagement team, your cohort will visit various parks within King County to gather data from the public and will work collaboratively with and learn from current King County project managers while developing valuable career and community contacts. Great opportunities for students looking to begin a career in local government or community relations connected to climate-oriented capital projects.

Job Duties

  • Researching and designing community engagement tools and activities such as survey questions or informational materials in collaboration with existing King County staff.
  • Conducting field visits to support King County staff in gathering relevant field staff and site information to support informed project planning and design
  • Directly connecting with King County communities about topics relevant to assigned projects during public meetings, field visits, or other outreach activities.
  • Supporting and collaborating with King County staff on specific project goals associated with community information and input gathering.
  • Compiling and synthesizing site information and community input to support project planning and design. 
  • Performing other tasks to support the project design and review process in collaboration with King County staff.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned. 

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Experience:

  • College-level students currently enrolled and continuing into the fall of 2022 in full or part-time status at an accredited community college or four-year institution.
  • Experience conducting informal and formal results-oriented research leading to focused deliverables 
  • Experience building relationships and working collaboratively with a range of stakeholder groups to meet a timeline
  • Experience synthesizing gathered information into readable and understandable reports

Skills:

  • Computer skills/digital literacy with programs such as Microsoft 365 tools an e-mail.
  • Ability to use a tablet, smart phone and other technology  
  • Highly developed interpersonal engagement and communication skills 
  • Openness and ability to engage with the public concerning specific project relevant topics
  • Cultural competency and familiarity with/in limited English-speaking populations, immigrant/refugee communities, BIPOC communities, and culturally diverse communities[DS1] .
  • This position requires a valid driver's license and the ability to drive a King County vehicle

Highly Desired:

  • Experience building relationships and working collaboratively with/in limited English-speaking populations, immigrant/refugee communities, BIPOC communities, and culturally diverse communities.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English
  • Data collection and/or public survey design experience

Supplemental Information

Telecommuting Requirement 

 

The work associated with this position will be performed predominantly by telecommuting, with occasional onsite work and meetings, as influenced by business needs. The employee will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  

 

They must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) to reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer. King County is doing its part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and remains committed to reducing our carbon footprint.  

 

To support employees during this time, King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to help working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will be joining an innovative and progressive team.  

 

Work Location: Employees in this role will work predominately in the field at various King County Parks as part of a mobile engagement team. When not working in the field, work will be performed remotely from a home office or downtown Seattle office space. 

 

Work Schedule: This position is covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provisions and is overtime eligible.
