Biweekly Hours: 80.00

Shift: 7a-7p, 3p-11p, 11p-7a, On Call, Rotating Weekends & Holidays

Summary: 

Performs various duties in the operating room. Maintains the cleanliness and efficiency of operating room services. Performs limited neonate through geriatric patient care services. Orients employees to equipment and procedures. Serves as a role model to other operation room technicians and students. Upholds the mission, vision, values, and customer service standards of The MetroHealth System.

 

 

Responsibilities:

1. Performs various duties in the operating room by:

a. Demonstrating knowledge of and utilizing principles of asepsis.

b. Preparing the operating room by ensuring proper supplies are available and setting up the sterile table, instruments, and equipment appropriate to the surgical procedure.

c. Assisting in draping and preparing patients and preparing specimens.

d. Assisting in gowning and gloving members of the surgical team and demonstrating appropriate scrub, gowning, and close glove techniques.

e. Displaying knowledge of anatomy and physiology as they relate to the surgical procedure in order to anticipate the needs of the surgeon.

f. Identifying surgical instruments by name and knowing their use and application.

g. Confirming that instruments, supplies, and equipment are appropriate for the surgical procedure.

h. Passing instruments to surgeon according to needs.

i. Informing the circulating nurse of collection of specimens and/or cultures, preparing the specimens, and passing them off the sterile field as necessary.

j. Maintaining correct soft goods, sharps, and instrument counts with circulating nurse.

k. Assisting in applying dressing and casts as necessary.

l. Assisting in lifting, transferring, and transporting patients as necessary.

m. Facilitating the process to meet room turnover targets.


2. Maintains the cleanliness and efficiency of operating room by:

a. Cleaning operating room, equipment, and furniture as necessary.

b. Cleaning, wrapping and/or preparing instruments, supplies, and equipment for sterilization; operating autoclave.

c. Returning equipment and supplies to the appropriate storage area(s).

d. Ensuring adequate levels of inventory are on hand and assisting in maintaining equipment.

3. Maintains a safe therapeutic environment by:

a. Demonstrating knowledge and appropriate use of electrical and mechanical equipment used on the sterile field.

b. Demonstrating knowledge of the use of medications used on the sterile field and appropriately labeling medications used on the sterile field.

c. Demonstrating practices related to infection control and utilizing the practices of Standard Precautions.

d. Demonstrating knowledge of the location and use of emergency equipment.

e. Disposing of needles and sharps in appropriate containers.

f. Disposing of disposable surgical supplies according to established practices.

g. Checking surgical instrumentation prior to use and removing broken or unsafe instruments from the sterile field and informing appropriate personnel.

h. Displaying knowledge of patients’ rights and observing patients’ privacy.

4. Orients employees to equipment and procedures.

5. Maintains knowledge of current medical and surgical equipment and procedures by:

a. Attending operating room in-services and team conferences.

b. Utilizing available resources to maintain an awareness of the current trends in surgical technology and intraoperative patient care.

c. Identifying own learning needs and seeking opportunities for learning and skill development.

6. Adheres to the MetroHealth System’s policies and procedures and responds appropriately to “on call” and flexible shift responsibilities as scheduled.

7. Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications:

Required:
High school graduate or passage of a high school equivalency exam.
Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technology.
Possesses and maintains certification as a surgical technologist.

Physical Requirements:
May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day.
May need to sit or stand for extended periods.
See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Ability to push/pull 350 pounds.
Ability to lift 35 pounds.
Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids.
Requires some exposure to chemicals.
