- Summary
Lead Rail Station Custodians maintain the cleanliness of various rail stations, elevators, escalators, park and rides, plazas and industrial facilities. In addition to performing the full range of responsibilities of the Rail station custodian, additional functions include identifying, scheduling, coordinating, planning, assigning, overseeing and evaluating the work of other custodial crew members. Leads assign overtime, train personnel and perform related administrative duties using computers and other office equipment.
Link Light Rail
Metro Transit's Rail Division is responsible for operating and maintaining Link Light Rail service on a 20.4-mile route from the Angle Lake Station south of Sea-Tac Airport to the University of Washington Station, expanding to Northgate in 2021. Plans and/or construction are underway extending the system to the north, east, south, and west. Expansion over the next five years alone will include the addition of more than 20 stations and 40 miles of light rail track. The light rail line is a critical part of the region's transportation network and carries more than 79,000 weekday daily riders.
Who May Apply: This career service position is open to the general public. Additional consideration will be given to King County career service employees with a minimum of two year’s experience in the station custodian classification at rail. An applicant eligibility list may also be created for vacancies which may arise over the next year in this classification.

Work Schedule: This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. The workweek is normally 40 hours. Work shift is subject to change and you may work a schedule of 4/10s or 5/8s depending on a seniority based pick system. A shift differential will be given for evening and graveyard shifts.
NOTE: Current dayshift wage range: $32.80 2nd Shift: $34.44. 3rd Shift: $35.26.

In addition to performing the full range of responsibilities of the Rail Station Custodian classification, incumbents in this classification will also perform the following duties:
- Prioritize, schedule and assign work for custodial crew
- Oversee and evaluate the work of station custodians and monitor work in progress
- Investigate and resolve citizen complaints
- Secure areas for safe cleaning
- Clean and provide litter and trash pick-up at stations, platforms, park and rides, plazas, right-of-ways and various industrial light rail facilities
- Load and unload small equipment, debris and trash
- Mix and use cleaning chemicals and solutions
- Empty trash and recycle bins
- Operate pressure washers, floor scrubbers and associated equipment
- Clean, stock and sanitize restrooms and elevators
- Dust, wipe, wash and vacuum surfaces
- Request and stock various supplies
- Clean glass and surface areas; remove graffiti
- Respond to emergency calls as necessary and prioritize emergency tasks in the absence of on-site supervision
- Plan, schedule and coordinate activities and work with other trades; assist other trades as necessary
- Perform snow and ice removal
- Operate company assigned vehicles
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
We are looking for candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications:
One year of recent professional industrial cleaning/janitorial experience AND one year of recent professional lead experience.
Additional Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:
- Knowledge of basic janitorial techniques
- Knowledge in the use and care of cleaning equipment
- Knowledge of basic safety rules and applicable OSHA laws
- Knowledge in the proper use, mixing and disposal of cleaning chemicals and solutions
- Skill in reading, following and safely handling cleaning supplies per manufacturer’s instructions
- Basic oral and written communication skills including the ability to understand and deliver instructions in English
- Basic computer skills; ability to use Microsoft Office products, the internet and other required office equipment, tools and resources
- Skill in dealing proactively and sensitively with customers
- Skill in performing multiple tasks simultaneously
- Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse
backgrounds - Skill in learning new methods and ways of doing work
- Skill in problem solving and analytical skills required to solve
common problems - Knowledge of and compliance with applicable safety standards and requirements
- Skill in providing leadership and direction to others
- Skill in planning and coordinating work
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships

Necessary Special Requirements:
- A valid Washington State Driver’s License and an acceptable driving record. A five-year complete driving abstract will be evaluated.
- Forklift, Aerial Lift, and First-Aid/CPR certifications must be acquired within 90 days of hire date (training will be provided by employer).
Physical Requirements:
- Constantly lift, carry and move objects of less than 25 pounds
- Lift and move up to 50 pounds unassisted
- Move up to 100 pounds with assistance
- Work at heights reaching up to 40 feet
- Walk continuously throughout the workday
Working Environment: Must be able to work from high places using mechanical lift devices; work is performed both indoors and outdoors, and in inclement weather.
The most competitive candidates also have the following desirable qualification:
Experience and skill in forklift and/or aerial lift operation
