UW-IT is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW.  IT Infrastructure within UW-IT, provides system design, system management, software engineering and operational support for academic and administrative systems, the University’s wired and wireless networks, telecommunications services, departmental IT and the UW-IT organization.

UW-IT has an outstanding opportunity for a Resource Manager.

This position is responsible for managing and developing technical staff within Information Technology Infrastructure (ITI), to include supervision, technology needs assessment, technology skills planning and development, technical resource allocation among projects and services, team building, professional development, and organization development. This position will work closely with ITI leadership to ensure that all projects and services are optimally staffed for achieving technology project and service goals, while also encouraging professional development of the employee. This includes facilitation of moving people to new services or projects to further their professional development as well as bring new perspectives to an effort.

This position manages staff in support of UW-IT and ITI projects and services. ITI provides knowledgeable system and network design and administration, software and network engineering, and operational support for academic systems and networks, administrative systems, and research computing.

This position requires an experienced manager who will be responsible for overseeing, planning, leading and coordinating technical engineering staff on project and service needs, in support of service and project teams, and other staff working on a variety of computing and networking services and projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Responsibilities for Resource Manager Role

  • Act as primary supervisor (e.g. performance management, professional development/career planning) for technical engineering professionals

  • Maintain a broad view of the organizational demands and available resources to facilitate planning and staffing of projects and services and leading skill development for the organization

  • Advocate for employee’s career and continuous skill development

  • Broker between project and service teams and individual employees to ensure work aligns with priorities

    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Science discipline related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in information technology systems engineering, management, or operations.

  • Outstanding management and project management skills to include demonstrated ability to set and meet goals, assess resource needs, formulate schedules, and communicate status.

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams. Solid supervisory, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to speak and write clearly about technical issues for both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Demonstrated expertise in one of the following technology suites, Unix Development and Operations, Java Development, Web, Database, and Development Tools OR Windows Development and Operations, .NET, Storage Engineering and Operations, and Applications Engineering.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in contemporary distributed computing technologies.

  • Demonstrated experience in IT Service Management and Project Management fundamentals.

  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.

  • Experience managing information technology resources in a complex organization with a large heterogeneous distributed computing environment.

  • Must be able to manage effectively under pressure, exercising independent judgement in resolving problems.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    This position leads, manages and contributes to work in a collaborative team environment, supported through a shared working environment, scheduled and ad hoc meetings, and the use of a variety of development and communication tools. The incumbent may need to respond to staffing requirements for service incidents, outages, service or project needs, and respond to customer questions on a priority/urgency basis. The incumbent may need to work varied hours to meet priority project milestones and other externally imposed deadlines and to accomplish work assignments on which the activities of others depend. Occasional travel may be required.
