Professional Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver

Driver must be able to drive a tractor-trailer combination with a capacity of at least 26,000 GVW, to transport and deliver goods or materials in loose or packaged form. Requires a commercial drivers’ license, class ABCD. Must comply with FMCSA truck driving rules and regulations as well as with company policies and procedures.  Requires use of automated routing equipment. May be required to hook and unhook trailers and unload truck.

CDL Driver Responsibilities

  • Performs pre-trip inspection of tractor and trailer before operating the vehicle
  • Operates semi-truck with in-cab ELD according to state laws.
  • Transports load over required route to proper destination, observing all traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Must read and interpret maps and routing assistance devices to determine vehicle routes.
  • Obtain shipping bills of lading and necessary signatures and return completed paperwork to shipping office. Maintains any related records required.
  • Report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations or damage to the tractor and trailer.
  • Crank trailer landing gear up and down to safely secure vehicles.
  • Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew as needed; check that vehicle position is correct and any special loading equipment is properly positioned.
  • Check conditions of trailers after contents have been unloaded to ensure there has been no damage, foreign materials or biological produce remaining. Document and remove any debris.
  • Inventory and inspect goods to be moved to determine quantities and conditions.
  • Chocks rear wheels of truck or trailer before any unloading takes place. Removes chocks before driving away from shipping dock.
  • Performs miscellaneous service duties daily (checking, oil, water, gasoline, and air in tires). Reports any maintenance malfunctions to maintenance shop.
  • Secure cargo for transport, using ropes, blocks, chains, binders and/or covers.
  • Follow special procedures related to specific cargo, such as checking refrigeration systems when carrying frozen foods.
  • Visually inspect trailers each day for maintenance purposes at customer plant site facility.
  • Must be at least 23 years old and have a minimum of 2 years of experience driving a commercial motor vehicle, or at least 100,000 miles.
  • Must have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record
  • Must hold a valid commercial Driver’s license Class ABCD
  • Tact and diplomacy required in dealing with customer personnel at delivery points.
  • Ability to take care of the customers’ needs while following company
  • Requires high degree of attention and considerable dexterity in the control of tractor trailer and in preventing damage to materials and trailer equipment.
  • Must meet Department of Transportation physical and medical requirements and pass substance abuse screening; as a safety sensitive employee subject to random substance abuse screening under company policy.
  • Ability to make critical decisions while following company procedures.
  • Maintain the trait of being dependable and trustworthy.
  • Ability to utilize the available time to organize and complete trip assignments within given deadlines
