Summary

King County Metro Transit is currently recruiting for two undergraduate or graduate student Interns or Veteran Fellows to provide technical/database administration and document control services for the Project Controls Office. The Project Controls Office is a work group in the Project Controls, Management & Performance unit. This unit in Metro's Capital Division has over twenty team members and is expanding. They are responsible for performance monitoring, budget, and finance administration for the Division, data management, project administration, contract procurement, and developing process improvements.
 
The successful candidates will play a critical role in the development and launching of new services as our work group continues to support the growth of King County Metro Transit as we expand service to serve our growing communities where needs are greatest. Ideal start time for interns or fellows is June 2020. The position is expected to work full time hours over the summer and part time hours during Fall and Winter 2020/2021.  Metro is open to interns or fellows starting before or after June if schedules align for the intern or fellow and program. Who May Apply
These internships/fellowships are open ONLY to:

  • Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate college program. Students must be full-time or part-time students during the entire internship, with the exception of the summer.
  • U.S Military Veterans, Reservists or members of the National Guard. Those who left the military within the last five years and reside within King County will be given preference.

Work Schedule
Student applicants should expect to work up to 20 hours/week during the school year; up to 40 hours/week during the summer; non-student applicants (Veterans) may work up to 40 hours/week. Work will generally be carried out during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8am- 5pm). Interns/fellows may work with their supervisors to accommodate class schedules or other conflicts.
 
Benefits
Interns/Veteran Fellows receive a free ORCA transit fare pass for unlimited rides on King County Metro, Pierce Transit, Kitsap Transit, Kitsap Fast Ferries, Community Transit, Everett Transit, Sound Transit and King County Water Taxi, Seattle Streetcar and Seattle Monorail.  Additionally, Interns/Veteran Fellows will accrue .025 hours of paid sick leave for each hour in pay status. Veteran Fellows who work 30 or more hours/week for the duration of their assignment will also be offered medical benefits under the Affordable Health Care Act. Interns/Veteran fellows are not eligible for retirement, holiday and vacation pay.
 
Specific Salary Ranges:
  • Undergraduate Interns: $17.5208 - $22.2087 per hour Graduate Interns: $19.7266 – $25.0045 per hour.
  • Vets 4 HIRE Veteran Fellows will be compensated at a range of $17.5208 - $31.6969 depending on military rank and education level.
    • Veteran Fellow I - $17.5208 – $22.2087 per hour - High School graduate; or pursuing BA; or enlisted grade E4 or lower
    • Veteran Fellow II - $19.7266 - $25.0045 per hour - Possess BA; or pursuing Masters; or enlisted grade E5 or higher
    • Veteran Fellow III - $25.0061 - $31.6969 - Completed Masters or Officer rank

Job Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work. Each intern or veteran fellowship assignment will involve a set of customized learning objectives and deliverables that provide hands-on experience assisting with and accomplishing specific work tasks or projects.

Under the guidance and mentorship of a professional Project Controls Office staff, the selected Interns/Vet Fellows will gain hands-on experience by providing technical/database administration and document control services for the Project Controls Office.  Additionally, the selected candidates will have learning objectives specific to each program:

Document Control/Procurement Position:

  • Public sector contracting and procurement processes; Gain knowledge of RCWs and best practice.
  • Principles, practices, design and managing document resources for consulting and construction contract development.
  • Data collection, analysis, reporting and visualization for decision-making.
  • Supporting transit customers and other stakeholders, and managing communications with diverse audiences.
Technical/Database Administration Position:
  • Developing systems requirements, gathering data, normalizing data to be migrated into a centralized database.
  • Apply technical aptitude to improve contract management.
  • Apply academic learnings in the design of data collection methods and tools.
  • Develop applied data analysis and research skills toward contract data technologies to improve collaboration and communication using SharePoint.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Student Internship Candidates
Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program or registration for full-time or part- time classes for the Fall 2020 quarters/semester.
 
Veteran Fellow Candidates
Will have an equivalent combination of education and experience leading to ability to perform the duties of the position. Veterans who currently reside within King County, AND have left the military within the past five years will be given hiring preference.
 
Minimum Qualifications for both positions:

  • Full or part-time undergraduate or graduate student OR veteran.
  • Passion and interest in exploring a career procurement, supply chain management, technical management or database administration.
  • Self-starter willing and able to complete assigned tasks with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Experience using GIS, Excel, Word, and email.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with a diverse group of individuals from a variety of positions and backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications:

Document Control/Procurement Position:
  • Strong interest in Public Contracting or Procurement process.
  • Experience in working with document controls including filing, tracking and version control.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint.
  • Experience working in a structured business process environment and ability to evaluate current process and propose process improvements
  • Self-starter with the ability to take direction and work independently, as well as, on teams
  • Ability to work well and respectfully with a diverse group of individuals from a variety of different positions and backgrounds.
Technical/Database Administration Position:
  • Pursuing degree program in database design/administration, Technology Management, or related program
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to gather large sets of data from multiple sources and consolidate into a single data set.
  • Ability to work in teams
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Data tables, relational database etc.
  • Ability to work well and respectfully with a diverse group of individuals from a variety of different positions and backgrounds
