Shift: Monday-Friday, 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m.
Regular Days Off: Saturday and Sunday
Supervision Received: The Dining Services People Excellence Manager serves under the general supervision of the Director of Dining Services and functions independently while following University and department policies, procedures, missions, and goals.
Supervision Exercised: Provides supervision and observation of staff who are training and onboarding including fulltime, contract, and, student employees. Directly supervises 1 student intern or up to 2 full-time team members.
Salary: $64,000-$68,000 (To commensurate with education and experience)

General Statement of Duties: The Dining Services People Excellence Manager provides training, development, evaluation, and onboarding, and is responsible for improving the productivity of all department employees. This position assesses department-wide developmental needs to drive training initiatives and identifies and arranges suitable training solutions for all employees specifically related to foodservice and safety. This position actively searches, creatively designs, effectively implements, and thoughtfully evaluates methods to educate, enhance performance, improve moral, and recognize positive performance for department staff. Additionally, this position maintains departmental responsibilities outlined in multiple union contracts, scheduling, and is the departmental liaison to human resources and payroll. Additionally, this position completes hiring and onboarding practices for the people resources in the department. 

Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but not limited to:
Essential:

  • Conducts annual department training & development needs assessment.
  • Develops trainings and programs to achieve assessment needs.
  • Administers spending against the departmental budget for areas of responsibility.
  • Obtains and /or develops effective training materials utilizing a variety of media, addressing the diversity of learning styles, and maintains training records for each employee.
  • Train and coach managers, supervisors and others involved in employee development efforts to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Plans, organizes, facilitates and orders supplies for employee development, training, and moral/celebration events.
  • Develops and maintains organizational communications such as bulletin boards and staff newsletters to ensure employees have knowledge of training and development events and resources as well as moral and team building activities.
  • Conducts follow-up assessment of all completed training to evaluate and measure results and effectiveness in achieving desired learning outcomes.
  • Modifies programs as needed according to assessment results for continuous improvement.
  • Exemplifies the desired culture and philosophies of the organization.
  • Works effectively as a team member with other members of management.
  • Understands the need to deliver training in a multi-cultural/multi-generational workplace with individuals who may have English as a second language.
  • Conducts hiring processes and recruitment for open positions in the department (full-time, part-time, and student employees).
  • Completes on-boarding and orientation processes for new employees, as well as assessment and follow up to ensure success.
  • Serves as backup and support for payroll duties in the absence of area managers.
  • Creates and updates Contractor and Student Employee handbooks.
  • Reviews and creates new procedures in the department as related to job functions.
  • Maintains attendance logs in a database and monitors for patterns of behavior.
  • Create and execute a student leadership and supervisor program.
  • Create, maintain, and evaluate training and onboarding curriculum for each area.
  • Establishes employee moral efforts and programming to celebrate and recognize department employees.
  • Collaborates with on campus departments and regional peers to complete job duties.
  • During peak periods of demand/summer, assists in Dining operations and delivery of services.
  • Maintains departmental responsibilities outlined in multiple union contracts.
  • The Dining Departmental liaison to Human Resources and Payroll.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; in lieu of Bachelor's degree an Associate's degree with 2 years relative experience or 4 years relative experience can be substituted.
  • Three years of experience in employee training and development preferably in foodservice environments.
  • ServSafe Certified or ability to complete certification within three months of hire.
  •  Tips Certified or ability to complete certification within three months of hire.
  •  Commonwealth of Massachusetts Allergen Certification or ability to complete certification within three months of hire.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting/standing at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  • Standing for extended periods of time.

Preferred Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  •  Strong people and presentation skills.
  • Adept with a variety of multimedia training platforms and methods.
  • Ability to evaluate and research training options and alternatives.
  • Ability to design and implement effective training, development, and onboarding procedures.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office Suite and Online Applications.
  • Experience working with Employment Unions and Contracts.
  •  Bilingual.


Additional Information:

Salary:
For the majority of new employees, the minimum starting salary will apply. Specific salary for current Westfield State University employees and individuals currently working for the state of Massachusetts must be calculated individually in accordance with collective bargaining and state policies and procedures.
