King County District Court Profile
KCDC is the largest and most technologically advanced Court of Limited Jurisdiction in the State of Washington. It currently processes approximately 200,000 matters per year with 25 elected judges and roughly 260 employees at 8 courthouse locations. The Court is a leader in many areas involving public safety and access to justice, including the use of problem-solving courts, jail-alternative programs, technology- and judge-managed probation services. Thirteen cities that contract with King County for court services provided by KCDC.
 
Position Summary
This high-profile Court Operations Director position works with elected judges under the supervision of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and the Deputy CAO (DCAO), at the pleasure of a five-member Executive Committee of Judges. The Court Operations Director is expected to develop and maintain professional relationships and positive interactions within and outside King County government on behalf of the Court. In conjunction with the DCAO, the Court Operations Director is responsible for working directly with the Courthouse location managers to ensure successful court administration at that location.   The Court Operations Director must have proven leadership skills, particularly in the areas of stakeholder relationships, executive decision making, visioning and strategic planning, operations management, case flow and workflow management and accountability and court performance. 

Job Duties

The Court Operations Director is a strong, politically savvy and trustworthy leader who possesses a passion for justice and a commitment to the independence of the Judicial Branch. The Court Operations Director will communicate openly, honestly and collaboratively with a diverse group of judges, CAO, DCAO, leadership team, city partners, public and private bar and other key stakeholders.  The Court Operations Director will expertly use methods of continuous improvement on a systems-wide level in reviewing and monitoring calendaring, case flow and workflow management across all the courthouse locations; provide new ideas and innovation through change management processes that improve    the efficiency and delivery of effective court services; and ensure that both internal and external court services are delivered with the highest of customer service standards.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Executive leadership, decision making and performance measurement (public-sector preferred);
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong and successful strategic-partner relationships with internal and outside stakeholders in a political environment;
  • Strong strategic planning and vision skills;
  • Court operations experience with a background in calendaring, case flow and workflow management; and
  • Knowledge of and experience with accountability and court performance.
 
Bachelor's Degree (Master's preferred) in Judicial, Public, or Business Administration or related field, plus demonstrated experience as a senior executive in government or the private sector; or
 
An equivalent combination of education and demonstrated senior leadership experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform as the Court Operations Director.
