Job Description

A Natural Resource Specialist II (Field Biologist) fulltime (40hours/week) classified staff position is available with the Virginia Tech Conservation Management Institute to support a variety of ongoing research and management projects at Fort AP Hill (FAPH), Virginia. The position will be located at US Army Garrison Fort AP Hill Virginia near Bowling Green, Virginia.
The Natural Resource Specialist II (Field Biologist) will support FAPH natural resources program managers to: 1) Survey and maintain plant occurrence database of the following federally and/or state-listed plant species, swamp pink (Helonias bullata), small whorled pogonia (Isotria medeoloides), New Jersey Rush (Juncus caesariensis), and American ginseng (Panax quinqifolius). Assist FAPH to manage endangered plant species habitats, to include but not limited to small scale habitat manipulations of the under-/mid-story using hand tools and/or brush cutters, and/or chainsaws. 3) Perform field surveys for both game and non-game species. 4) Locate and delineate invasive species occurrences and in the identification and planning of appropriate management strategies that promote biodiversity and native species. 5) Participate in meetings, briefings, and workshops related to natural resources management and endangered species management as appropriate and provide informational briefings to FAPH staff. 6) Manage and maintain geospatial data layers in support of natural resources program managers. 7) Support natural resources program managers in inventories, management activities, as well as outreach and environmental awareness events.8) Support FAPH in its recreational program through the collection of biological data from harvested game animals and iSportsman customer service.

Required Qualifications

1) Demonstrated experience in the identification of various flora and faunal species including but not limited to birds, insects, herpetofauna, and mammals in the in the field and lab within an ecological sampling system. 2) Experience navigating over rough terrain using topography maps, GPS and compass and must be willing to work in adverse weather and field conditions. 3) Ability to pass background checks required to work on military installations required. 4) Experience with Global Positioning Systems and ESRI based GIS software required. 5) Ability to perform basic statistical summaries of field data and report findings. Valid Driver’s License required.

Preferred Qualifications

1) A B.S. in Botany, Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Sciences, Forestry, Environmental Science or related field. 2) Previous experience worker on Military installations.
