Timeframe: 35 Weeks
Shift: Monday-Friday, 8:30a.m.-4:30p.m.
Regular Days Off: Saturday and Sunday
Supervision Received: The Retail Dining Supervisor works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Retail Dining Services Manager.
Supervision Exercised: 2 - 10 Student Employees; 4 - 6 Departmental Assistants
Salary: $1,520.68 Biweekly

General Statement of Duties: The Retail Dining Supervisor supervises and participates in the operation of a retail area, including ordering, receiving, pricing, stocking of and selling merchandise; uses a cash register; supervises subordinate employees in the retail area using operational schedules and guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but not limited to:
Essential:

  • Confirms operating fund balance daily; makes daily cash report and deposit using established forms and procedures to ensure accurate records and security of monies.
  • Routinely inventories stock each week.
  • Aids the unit manager in planning and serving special events such as banquets, conferences, etc., or other related duties to provide satisfactory service and controlled costs.
  • Ensures the overall cleanliness of retail area for a pleasant customer atmosphere and for sanitation requirements; ensures all refrigeration and freezer temperatures are maintained.
  • Maintains security awareness to prevent pilferage, reporting problems or suspicions to unit manager.
  • Develops marketing plans and implements promotions for retail location.
  • Prepares and cooks food items in small or large quantities according to standard operating procedure to fill customer orders in a timely fashion.
  • Keeps all records pertaining to any food service unit(s) assigned using standard report forms and procedures to maintain accurate operating records.
  • Aids manager in staffing, training and evaluation of personnel; may also assist the manager in the scheduling, hiring, training and evaluation of student employees following standard procedures.
  • Performs related work as required.


Requirements:

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ability to understand and apply the laws rules policies and procedures governing the food service department.
  • Ability to judge the proper quality, appearance and condition of foods by sensory observation.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise and understandable manner.
  • Ability to supervise, including assigning work, providing training and disciplining employees.
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others.
  • Knowledge of the safety practices and procedures followed in food handling and storage.
  • Knowledge of the effects of time, temperature and weather conditions on food.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Ability to make mathematical and monetary computations accurately and with reasonable speed.

Qualifications Acquired on Job:

  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, policies and procedures governing the food service department.
  • Knowledge of department procedures for preparation, service and storage of food and beverage.
  • Knowledge of the departmental ordering systems.
  • Knowledge of inventory procedures.
  • Knowledge of Food Pro

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

  • At least 2 years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in food service work in a hotel, restaurant, cafeteria or catering firm or a diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school at a high school level or higher with a major in home economics, culinary arts, food service or food trades.

License and/or Certification Requirements:

  • Incumbents must be certified as food handlers within 90 days of the appointment start date through a recognized program approved by the Westfield State University (i.e. ServSafe).


Additional Information:

Salary:
For the majority of new employees, the minimum starting salary will apply. Specific salary for current Westfield State University employees and individuals currently working for the state of Massachusetts must be calculated individually in accordance with collective bargaining and state policies and procedures.
