Summary:
The Surgical Technologist (Scrub Tech) participates as a member of the L&D team under direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Scrub Tech will be a graduate of an accredited school for surgical technologists, or have one or more years of experience as a scrub tech in the OR and/or L&D setting.

Responsibilities:
I.Acts as a scrub nurse during the operative procedure, and assists with vaginal deliveries.A.Pre procedure1Prepares for the surgical procedure by reviewing physician preference cards.2Sets up surgical equipment required for the procedure.3Selects appropriate sterile supplies as listed on the physician profile.4Sets up table, instruments and supplies at the appropriate time according to established protocol.5Counts instruments, sponges and needles with the circulating nurse.6Assists with maintenance of accurate preference cards.B.Procedure1Understands and applies principles of aseptic technique.2Demonstrates integrity in aseptic technique.3Scrubs, dons gown and gloves in accordance with established policies and procedures.4Maintains the sterile field by monitoring the sterility of all supplies used during the operative procedure.5Performs pre-op skin prep using sterile technique.6Complies with AORN standards on confinement and containment.7Assesses and anticipates the surgeon’s needs for exposure and selects appropriate method. May not aid in exposure by cutting tissue or performing blunt dissection.8Assists in preparation, positioning and draping of patient and operative area according to need.9Demonstrates methods of tissue handling that promote tissue preservation and wound healing.10Provides appropriate retraction with protection of anatomical structures.11Utilizes appropriate suctioning techniques to maintain a dry field.12Provides adequate exposure by appropriate sponging techniques.13Utilizes sponges/laps appropriately for pressure and hemostasis. May not control blood flow, prevent hemorrhage (cauterizing bleeder), but may apply ESU to hemostat with physician direction.14Operates tables, lights, suction equipment, ESU, vacuum extractor, and other equipment safely and effectively.15Passes instruments during surgery, recognizing and interpreting the immediate situation to anticipate surgeon needs.16Prepares and manages solutions at the operative field.17Assists in closing of body planes and skin. May cut suture. May not apply or tie suture. May apply staples after skin approximated by the surgeon.18Assists in operative delivery of newborn.19Counts instruments, sponges, etc. as established by policy when relieved during a case.20Prepares specimens as directed by the surgeon and according to policy for delivery to the lab.C.Post Procedure1Removes used instruments and supplies from the OR/LDR.2Disposes of hazardous items per established protocols.3Cleans instruments and returns to Sterile Processing per established protocols.4Reports any stated physician concerns to Charge Nurse/Unit Coordinator.II.Maintains a safe environment by following established OR protocols.A.Demonstrates integrity in aseptic practice.B.Knows and applies principles of aseptic practice.C.Assists in good aseptic technique for all members of the surgical team.D.Monitors the sterility of all supplies used during the operative procedure.E.Complies with AORN standards on confinement and containment.F.Disposes of hazardous materials appropriatelyG.Reports potential problems to the Charge Nurse/Unit Coordinator.H.Removes equipment not working properly from the immediate work environment and reports to charge nurse/manager and Biomed.I.Reports any non-functioning supplies during a procedure to Risk Management. Procures non-functioning supply for Biomed/Vendor evaluation.IIIAnticipates patient care need.A.Provides quality patient care as outlined in the department’s policies and procedures.B.Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and the skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.C.Addresses and supports cultural practices as long as such practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of medical therapy.D.Anticipates the need for emergency deliveries, ensuring readiness of adequate equipment and supplies.E.Assists the RN as requested.1Assists with application of the external fetal monitor.2Assists in the delivery room.3Helps to bathe, feed, and provide routine care for well babies.4Assists in turning, moving, and transporting patients as directed.5Performs in and out catheterizations as requested by the RN.IV.Assists in care and handling of professional equipment and supplies.A.Is aware of the need for special handling of surgical instruments.B.Is aware of the need for cost containment.C.Maintains correct stock levels of supplies; make suture packs.D.Maintains equipment in good working order.
