Summary

As member of an interdisciplinary team, this Public Health Nurse (PHN) will provide consultation to child care providers, parents, and community members to promote the health, safety, and emotional well-being of children within early learning programs throughout Seattle and King County. This PHN is responsible for using professional knowledge and skills to demonstrate independent, self-motivated, and problem-solving consulting skills on a wide range of child care health, safety, and policy-related topics at child care centers and family child care homes in the community. This PHN also will participate in and communicate with a variety of community groups, coalitions, and advisory committees addressing the unique health and safety needs of children in child care so they might have more equity-driven opportunities to learn, develop, and grow.

Job Duties:

As member of an interdisciplinary team, this Public Health Nurse (PHN) will provide consultation to child care providers, parents, and community members to promote the health, safety, and emotional well-being of children within early learning programs throughout Seattle and King County. This PHN is responsible for using professional knowledge and skills to demonstrate independent, self-motivated, and problem-solving consulting skills on a wide range of child care health, safety, and policy-related topics at child care centers and family child care homes in the community. This PHN also will participate in and communicate with a variety of community groups, coalitions, and advisory committees addressing the unique health and safety needs of children in child care so they might have more equity-driven opportunities to learn, develop, and grow. 

 

General Duties

  • Provide consultation and training to child care and early learning providers one-on-one and also in groups on a variety of health and safety issues for children.
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team including Mental Health, Nutrition, and Community Health Professionals to meet the needs of children and providers.
  • Assist with routine health screenings.
  • Provide expertise regarding public health nursing scope, practice, and policy at many levels following best practices. 
  • Provide support services to clients that link/refer to necessary follow-up care, including other Health Department staff and community providers/partners, while assuring access and continuity of care. 
  • Provide program planning, monitor local work plans, and progress toward program goals.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities to meet laws, regulations (WAC), policies, and procedures. 
  • Provide training, orientation, and education to staff, clients, students, and the community, often through in-person and virtual forums.

 

Licensing/Certification Requirements

  • Washington State Registered Nurse License in good standing.
  • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current WA State Driver’s License or ability to travel to various sites in Seattle-King County
  • Current BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers.
  • Willing to provide options counseling

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills:

  • Knowledge of public health nursing principles and processes; human systems; infectious disease management and control; and health care system structure and function. 
  • Knowledge of child and adult learning and health education methods and principles, with ability to use communication methods to educate and learn from individuals and groups through community engagement and outreach.
  • Knowledge of personal safety standards, safety techniques, and principles. 
  • Demonstrated abilities to perform comprehensive nursing assessments and successfully engage clients in a plan of care. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in various community settings without on-site supervision; communicate effectively with patients and their families and with other health and human services staff; develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients; and support culturally and socio-economically diverse populations often facing harmful inequities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, multi-tasking, showing attention to detail, and providing crisis intervention with problem-solving and effective time management skills.
  • Demonstrated abilities in areas of medical record documentation, following up on progress toward goals, and case management. 
  • Demonstrated organizational and leadership abilities. 
  • Willingness to provide options counseling.
  • Ability to work with children, families, and child care providers via virtual and remote methods during the COVID-19 response period.


 Desirable:

  • Skilled in using information management systems and other health care technology.
  • Skilled in health education and training methods, including social media, virtual, and other forms of engagement for communications.
  • Background in public health.
  • Experience working with young children in child care, early learning, or school settings, especially those from birth to age 5.
  • Bilingual and/or bicultural 
  • Previous Child Care, Early Learning, Pediatric, or School Nurse experience preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position has a regular schedule of Monday-Friday 8 AM to 5 PM with some limited flexibility. There also may be limited evening and Saturday hours to conduct trainings and communications with child care providers when they’re available to meet. This position is subject to the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible for overtime pay.

 

WORK LOCATION: When not required to work remotely during the COVID-19 response period, this position will be based at the Chinook Building, located at 401 5th Ave in Seattle, WA. Much of the work is community-based. As needed, the position may be deployed to other Public Health Centers and sites throughout King County.
