GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs professional work supporting and assisting agency services staff with program related training.  Responsible for in the field training of Family Services Specialists and serves in an advisory capacity to new workers in collaboration with Supervisors.  Specializes in services staff training and development.  Provides support and direction to workers, and responsible for knowledge of policies and practices of social work in the department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Mentors family services specialists in all aspects of case management and service planning
  • Participates in case coordination, in collaboration with new workers,  in off-site activities to include, but not limited to, home visits, court and other community meetings
  • Provides guidance on program policy and assists in decision making in the field
  • Remains current on Virginia child welfare policies
  • Identifies training needs and develops/implements training plans for new employees
  • Orients new staff to team and agency culture
  • Develops training curriculum to supplement required State training, enhancing transfer of learning
  • Coordinates and documents all mandated training programs for new employees
  • Consult with the employee’s supervisor to assess training needs for new and existing employees
  • Provides appropriate feedback to new workers to help develop competency in the field of social work
  • Identifies internal and external training programs to address competency gaps
  • Track and report on training outcomes at: 30 days, 90 days, 6 months and 12 months
  • Prepares various professional written reports and documents
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external agencies
  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES

Education
Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in social work, psychology, counseling or other human services field

Experience
Required: Extensive experience as a Family Services Specialist in a local Department of Social Services (Virginia) or related position
 
Certifications/ Licenses
Required:  Valid Virginia driver's license with good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of social work principles and practices necessary for advising clients and delivering services in a public welfare setting
  • Thorough knowledge of policies, laws, regulations, standards and procedures relating to social work programs
  • Working knowledge of terminology, principles and methods used within the department
  • Knowledge of  human behavior
  • Ability to provide motivation and coaching in the workplace
  • Ability to assess individual and family strengths and needs in area such as health, housing, income, employment and education
  • Skill in the application of treatment and intervention approaches
  • Skill in coaching employees
  • Ability to write professional reports, correspondence and narrative
  • Skill in utilizing a personal computer
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and perform multiple activities independently sufficient to organize own work schedule and coordinate the training activities of others
  • Interact and communicate effectively with supervisors, staff and members of the general public
  • Ability to use independent judgment and work with little direct supervision
Additional Requirements
Subject to a complete criminal history and Child Protective Services background search with acceptable results. Must be able to perform the job as described in the Physical and Environmental Demands section of this job description. May be subject to DMV driving record review as required by amount of work related driving, specified by support responsibilities. May work outside normal working hours to include being on call for emergencies twenty-four hours a day, including weekend and holidays.
 
Supervisory Responsibilities
None, in the absence of the employee's supervisor this position will consult with another Family Services Supervisor.
