The Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Program at Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital invites applications for a dynamic, board certified/board eligible psychologist. Our team is devoted to providing smooth transition for adolescents from pediatric to adult providers, promoting awareness for the need for lifelong care and providing high-quality, patient-centered care for the adult with CHD. The ideal candidate is one that is highly collaborative and comfortable working in a team with other mental health professionals and ACHD certified specialists to develop an understanding of common CHD diagnoses, treatments and cardiac sequelae.
This is an opportunity for a highly motivated professional to join a program accredited by the Adult Congenital Heart Association and assist in the development of an integrated ACHD psychology service. Due to the variety and complexity of our CHD patients, this position will allow for the professional to be autonomous and create their own niche in the emerging field of behavioral cardiology/psychocardiology. Among adults with CHD, common cardiac-specific concerns include heart-focused anxiety, coping with a medical condition, adjustment to implanted cardiac devices, and surgical decision-making. Other specific patient concerns include transition from pediatric to adult care, employment, family planning, long-term prognosis, quality of life, and mortality/end-of-life concerns.
The position offers teaching opportunities with medical students, residents, and fellows. Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital is the primary academic affiliate of Michigan State University and appointments are available for qualifying candidates. Support for clinical research is also available.
