This is a special duty interim position for 9 – 12 months and it's open to Public Health employees only.
The Chief provide leadership, vision, and direction for the combined sections that consists of: Assessment, Policy Development, & Evaluation (APDE), the Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention (CDIP), and Communities of Opportunity (COO). The Chief must be a leader who is committed to equity in how and what the sections do, and have strong management, strategic planning, public health expertise, and research/evaluation skills. This position is part of the Department’s Executive Team.
The Chief is supported by executive leadership team that includes an operation manager, business finance manager, and section leaders who work together to provide strategic, policy, programmatic, and budget oversight of the combined units.
Public Health’s Assessment, Policy Development, and Evaluation (APDE), Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention (CDIP), and Communities of Opportunity (COO) works to advance health equity through its policy and systems work, health prevention and promotion efforts, and data/evaluation activities. The basis of our equity work is a commitment towards becoming an anti-racist system. Operationally, the sections are jointly administered and managed.
The Assessment, Policy Development and Evaluation (APDE) unit is a nationally recognized leader in community health assessment, providing health assessment data and analysis to inform planning, programs, and policies; and conducting evaluations of regional and local efforts aimed at improving the health of King County residents.
Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention (CDIP) works with community partners, providers, and other stakeholders to create healthy environments and achieve health equity through health promotion, harm reduction, and policy and systems change in the areas of: healthy eating/active living, tobacco and youth marijuana prevention, violence and injury prevention, drug use, and climate change. CDIP also seeks to improve access to care for breast, cervical and colon health, and supports the use of community health workers in addressing asthma and other health conditions.
Communities of Opportunity is a unique public/private/community-based partnership that aims to create greater racial, economic, and health equity that enables all people in King County to thrive and prosper by investing in place-based and cultural communities, policy and systems change, and learning communities.

The Chief guides the vision of the assessment and evaluation work of APDE and the community health work within CDIP and COO. This includes assuring alignment with the County and Department’s priorities while also addressing community needs. The Chief is responsible for assuring a strong operational and administrative/financial infrastructure that supports the programmatic and service work conducted by the sections. The Chief is responsible for strengthening and maintaining relationships with Public Health Seattle and King County divisions, King County agencies, and external partners. It is essential that the Chief is an equity champion that seeks to transform government processes and systems to be anti-racist and equitable.
The ideal candidate will enjoy working with diverse individuals and teams; have strong interpersonal and communication skills; is experienced with data-driven community health initiatives; a success track record with obtaining and managing federal, state, or local funding and/or philanthropic funding; and has experience managing and leading groups that include epidemiologists, evaluators, and community health program staff.
