Position Information

The Sonoma County Water Agency (Sonoma Water) is now hiring a full-time Automotive Mechanic!
Starting salary up to $33.87/hour ($70,690/year), a cash allowance of $600/month, and a competitive compensation package!

Sonoma Water is looking for an experienced automotive mechanic to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for inspecting and maintaining the safety and efficiency of vehicles used in various operations and services. You will also collaborate with heavy fleet mechanics to coordinate vehicle and part transfers into and out of our light and heavy fleet repair facilities. 

The ideal candidates will be self-motivated and capable of working effectively and efficiently. They will also have prior experience in:

  • Performing vehicle maintenance and repairs
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving to diagnose and repair
  • Conducting safety inspections
  • Coordinating vehicle transfers with dealers and vendors in the event of repairs or recalls
  • Recording, tracking, and updating records for preventive maintenance
Certifications from the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) program are highly desired.

About Sonoma Water 

Sonoma Water is a special district formed by the California State Legislature in 1949 and is responsible for providing a safe and reliable water supply to its customers in Sonoma and Marin counties. Sonoma Water also maintains 75 miles of flood control channels and provides sanitation services. Employing approximately 250 employees, Sonoma Water consists of seven divisions including Engineering and Resource Planning, Environmental Resources, Community and Government Affairs, Water and Wastewater Operations, Maintenance, and Administrative Services. Sonoma Water supports the concept of environmental sustainability, focusing on renewable power sources, and strives to be a leader in its water conservation and fishery restoration programs.

Employees of Sonoma Water are employees of a special district and are not subject to the provisions of the Civil Service Ordinance of the County of Sonoma. The Formal title for this position is Automotive Mechanic.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill full time Automotive Mechanic. Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience: Any combination of education, training, and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities listed. Normally, this would include the ability to read and write English and perform basic arithmetic calculations at a level sufficient to perform the duties of the position, and either completion of an automotive mechanical training program, or one year of automotive mechanical experience which relates to the knowledge and abilities listed.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential functions of the position.

Certifications and Licenses: Possession of a current Smog Check Technician license(s) as required by the State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair to test and repair emission control systems is desirable.

Special Requirement: Possession of small and large hand tools necessary to perform all assigned work is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: the fundamentals of automotive technology, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and other major vehicle components, current repair methods, tools, diagnostic equipment, and parts used in the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of vehicles;  safety practices; the principles of organizing and prioritizing work.

Ability to: learn to perform and perform routine and less complex diagnosis and repair od vehicle mechanical, electronic, and safety problems; learn to determine appropriate maintenance and repairs; learn to effectively use hand tools and automotive diagnostic equipment; learn to interpret manufacturers' specifications; learn to research and identify appropriate replacement parts; follow oral and written instructions; use computer system to access and maintain accurate records, including updates to inventory records, parts orders, time, and billing records, effectively deal with customers and vendors; perform basic arithmetic calculations, and occasionally work evenings and weekends.
