Job Description:

The Internal Auditor performs assignments to further advance the University's Internal Audit Plan. The audits are conducted in accordance with International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing promulgated by the Institute of Internal Auditors and include a review of internal controls. The position requires performance of systematic examinations and appraisals of accounting records and financial affairs of SUNY campuses and campus-related entities to ensure that accounts are maintained in compliance with governing laws, rules, regulations, and contracts; assesses the efficiency and effectiveness of programs; and evaluates internal controls and practices.

Additional duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Performs research on the functions of the organization to be audited to determine its purpose, organization, funds involved, and applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing its operation
  • Assists in establishing the scope of audit by analyzing and determining areas for audit and the period to be examined
  • Assists in planning audit activities, including specific audit tasks, and recommends audit schedule
  • Participates in entrance conferences with representatives of the organization being audited to explain audit goals, methodology and gain access to records
  • Conducts the audit by performing various tests, reviews, reconciliations, and evaluations of accounts, claims, records, and procedures to ensure that transactions are processed and properly accounted for and effective controls are in place
  • Completes and compiles work papers and Preliminary Draft Report narratives
  • Works with senior audit staff to develop and modify audit programs based on the annual audit plan and risk environment


Requirements:

Required qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Accounting or related field 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook and Excel
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and techniques
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and a desire for professional growth

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One to two years of related experience 
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, and regulations governing SUNY and related organizations
  • Internship experience in accounting or auditing and interest in certification (CPA, CIA, or CGFM)
  • Familiarity with Pentana software
