Summary

The Child Care Health Program (CCHP) in Public Health – Seattle & King County is seeking a 20-hour/week Communications Specialist who has strong communication skills about program progress for those it serves in the child care and early learning communities. The position also requires evaluation, data analysis, and Office 365 skills. A key goal of this position is to evaluate CCHP services to ensure they are improving the well-being of children, families, and child care providers by making sense of service outcomes for both the team and also citizens and community partners. This position, furthermore, seeks someone who is passionate about the well-being of often marginalized young children and the adults who care for them.

The CCHP is striving to elevate its abilities to enhance short- and long-term child well-being in the Seattle area and beyond. This position will assist the CCHP with developing methods of communication, dialogue, and information-gathering for, by, and with the community that can improve practices to boost child health; safety; behavior; social and emotional development; nutrition; physical activity; and other vital child, family, and provider outcomes.
 
Community-informed practices are central to this endeavor, meaning the CCHP is intentional about embracing the needs of diverse and often disenfranchised individuals, populations, languages, cultures, and systems to partner its consultation with their specific needs, perspectives, and orientations to wellness.

This job advertisement will also be used to fill a Short-Term Temporary position.

Work Location: Remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Typically, in the Chinook Building at 401 5th Avenue, Seattle WA 98104 as well as at various locations throughout the Seattle – King County area.

Work schedule: 40-hours per pay period or 20 hours/week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required to collect and manage information and to engage with child care providers and colleagues.

Job Duties

  • Communicate with CCHP colleagues, families, providers, and community partners about how to assess child, family, and provider outcomes from CCHP interventions.
    • Outcomes may be inclusive of communicable disease prevention, medication management, sanitation and hygiene, nutrition and food safety, reducing challenging behavior, and more.
  • Discern reasonable, measurable, and attainable methods to qualitatively and quantitatively assess child, family, provider, and program outcomes from interventions.
  • Design and develop specific communications and data tools to conduct efficacious assessments, evaluations, or surveys in ways that don’t induce significant burdens.
  • Develop simple, clear, and accessible communications to show providers their progress on health goals for the children in their care. Presentation methods may include:
    • Brief written reports with clear explanations and graphics clarifying outcomes.
    • Virtual and media communications, including social media and videos.
    • Community meetings with consideration for language, culture, and place.
    • Dialogues with the CCHP’s partners, including Seattle’s Dept. of Education and Early Learning, Best Starts for Kids, government agencies, and nonprofits.
  • Regularly review information and data collected to make sense of it for and to communicate about improving service outcomes.
  • Be guided by the tenet that all CCHP practices are oriented toward equity and justice for the health and well-being of the often-marginalized children and adults it serves.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Among the skills the CCHP is seeking from the Communication Specialist 1 are the following:

  • A history of evaluation, measurement, and survey work that embodies data collection, management, and helpful communications to individuals, communities, and programs.
 
  • Facility working with people who are often overburdened; are seeking simple, clear, and accessible guidance on achieving their goals; and benefit and learn from giving and receiving feedback.
 
  • Education, experience, and / or technical skills creating evaluation tools and data processing that inform coherent, useful messaging around performance improvement.
 
  • Excellent communication skills that gain trust with diverse, often disenfranchised people.
 
  • Creative abilities to implement social media, videos, and other communication methods that allow for dialogue with language-, culture-, and place-diverse communities.
 
  • Working knowledge of Office 365 tools, including Forms, Teams, Excel, and more.
 
  • Background in early learning and health- or public-health-related contexts.
 
  • Organizational skills, with a detail orientation and ability to work independently.
 
  • Washington State Driver's License and the ability to travel throughout Seattle and King County (post-COVID) to areas with limited public transportation to provide services.

  • Openness to assist with early-child-care systems development in Seattle and King County through dialogue with other health consultants, families, child care providers, Department of Education and Early Learning partners, and others in the community.
 
  • An eagerness to learn about related CCHP topics on which you're not fully grounded.

TEMPORARY TELECOMMUTING REQUIREMENT
 
The work associated with this position will be performed remotely, at least through July 5, 2021 in compliance with King County’s telecommuting mandate. It is possible that the work will be primarily performed remotely on an ongoing basis after July 5, 2021.  Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.  Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite.  Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.
