Job Summary

Provide a comprehensive and culturally sensitive set of support services designed to ensure the academic success of underrepresented students as measured by high retention and graduation rates. They will also work to support Academic Advising through providing academic coaching for an identified case load of students and will track student success in an effort to increase retention and completion rates. Responsible for daily caseload coordination for the part-time team of coaches in the overall coaching work of assisting with, identifying, designing, and coordinating the comprehensive program of academic support services, social services and activities for underrepresented student populations.

Essential Duties

1. Provide one-on-one support for assigned cohort of students in the areas based on grant-identified courses, academic coaching and planning, career coaching, student involvement and online academic engagement while fostering student development through clarification of academic, professional, and personal goals using strategies that contribute to successful degree completion. 

2. Monitor progress of assigned cohort of students and provide necessary support to enable students to complete their course of study especially with at-risk students to reduce attrition through referrals to internal and external programs for additional support services and follow-up as needed.   

3. Maintain general knowledge of degree programs and coordinate student engagement with academic advisors to ensure the student connects with necessary college staff to meet the requirements of graduation from degree programs while working with students to develop an individualized pathway to reach their academic and personal goals.  

4. Initiate strategic partnerships with various student service departments and stay current with all policy and procedures for the purpose of addressing time-sensitive student requests.  

5. Encourage and coach students through life events, obstacles, and challenges using research-based, coaching models that lead directly to greater levels of personal responsibility among students in their academic success. 

6. Compile data on student services, activities, and academic progress on the Starfish System. Develop and maintain accurate, organized, and detailed student records in order to produce reports that inform retention tactics and strategies paying special attention to program objectives that lead to persistence and graduation. 

7. Interpret, apply and abide by the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and parental confidentiality issues. 

8. Engage in creative and at times disruptive brainstorming to find solutions to student retention issues and takes initiatives with team members to implement solution in context of TCC’s mission to serve students.  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Applied Behavioral Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Child Development, Human Relations, Education or a related field.<

One-year of related experience advising community college students

The ability to develop positive relationships with personnel at all levels.

Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, staff and the community demonstrating effective verbal and written communication skills, as well as listening skills.

Ability to perform duties under one’s own initiative and with limited supervision.

Experience with personal computer operations including Microsoft products and the internet.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated experience in higher education.

Teaching experience in secondary or higher education.
