Summary:

Under the supervision of the RN/LPN team, the Ortho/Neuro Patient Care Tech performs duties as assigned by the nurse to adult and adolescent patients ≥ 16 years of age.The Ortho/Neuro Patient Care Tech assists nursing by performing assigned tasks that motivate, safeguard, and facilitate activities that restore body function and improve the overall care of the patient.

Experience, Knowledge and Skill

1.High school graduate required.

2.Specialized or Technical Education Required:

a.One year of college required OR

b.Certification as a medical assistant or EMT with 2 years ofwork experience in a healthcare field OR

c.Nursing Assistant with one year post-operative or inpatient rehabilitation experience.

3.Manual or Physical Skill Required:

Well coordinated and in good physical condition.

4.Physical Effort Required:

Intermittent exertion in positioning, lifting, transferring patients, equipment or other materials.Walking and standing predominant although some stooping, kneeling and reaching are required.

Responsibilities:

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

1.Performs/assists the RN/LPN team with treatments or activities approved and supervised by nursing including but not limited to accuchecks, dressing changes, removal of heparin locks, removal of staples and application of steri-strips, traction set-up, application of CPM and SCD’s.

2.Performs/assists with peripheral blood draws and the collection and labeling of specimens in accordance to NOHS policy.

3.Monitors vital signs as outlined in the care plan and reports any deviations from normal values to an RN/LPN.

4.Performs/assists with patient handling including, transferring, turning, lifting, and positioning.

5.Performs/assists the patient in completion of personal hygiene needs which include bathing, skin care, grooming, oral hygiene, toileting needs, and other daily functional activities as directed.

6.Serves patients their meals and assists with eating as needed.

7.Safeguards the patient by assisting them when walking, getting into or onto equipment, or practicing functional exercises.

8.Engages the patient to participate in their daily care as much as possible and to practice restorative activities that maximize their level of function, minimize physical decline, and promote their overall restoration as outlined in the care plan.

9.Transports patients to and from the therapy gym at scheduled times or to other departments as directed by the RN/LPN team.

10.Engages patients to participate in group activities designed to reinforce the education and functional improvement of the participants.

11.Arranges or provides patients with recreational or leisure activities as directed.

12.Assists in the maintenance of a healthful and safe environment.

13.Maintains traction, equipment, and supply storage areas for the department.Must monitor equipment assigned to an individual patient or removed from the department used in either treatment sessions or an assigned room. Ensures location and readiness of traction beds for transfers to other areas.

14.Must gather correct patient data and document or report patient treatments, activities or participation as directed.Ensures documentation of all patient care provided is entered into the medical record per hospital protocols.Maintains the confidentiality of all information according to hospital policy.

15.Assists in collecting data for Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scoring and other outcome measures as assigned.

16.Performs clerical duties in the absence of the unit secretary or as needed to support the overall effectiveness of the department.

17.Assists the unit secretary with inventory management of forms, supplies and equipment.

18.Assists the unit secretary in maintaining the general appearance of the unit.

19.Participates in unit specific educational programs and NOHS mandatory programs.

20.Extends courtesy and consideration for others in interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships.
