Information Security Officer

Full Time

Information technology plays a vital and ever-expanding role in the institutional mission. Southeast Missouri University seeks an Information Security Officer (ISO) to develop, implement and oversee information security planning, policies and procedures.  We are seeking a strong, knowledgeable leader to provide vision, strategy, broad-based planning, and hands-on responsibility.

The ISO reports to the CIO, is a member of the IT leadership team and serves a key role in university leadership, working with campus administration, academic leaders, and the campus community. The ISO is an advocate for the university's information security needs and is responsible for the development of a comprehensive information security plan.

The ISO leads the development and implementation of a security program, facilitates information security governance, advises campus leadership on security strategy, and designs appropriate policies to manage information security risk. The complexity of this position requires a leadership approach that is engaging and collaborative, with an ability to work with other leaders to set a balance between security strategies and other priorities at the campus level.

Duties and Responsibilities:

University Policy and Program Leadership

• Responsible for the strategic leadership of the University's information security program

• Provide guidance and counsel to the CIO and key members of the university leadership team, working with campus administration, academic leaders, and the campus community in defining objectives for information security

• Manage institution-wide information security governance, chair the Information Security Advisory Committee to establish an information security program and project priorities

• Lead information security planning processes to establish an inclusive and comprehensive information security program for the entire institution in support of academic, research, and administrative information systems and technology

• Establish annual and long-range security and compliance goals, define security strategies, metrics, reporting mechanisms and program services; and create a roadmap for continual program improvements

• Provide leadership in the analysis, discussion and development of privacy and security policy, standards and best practices, and guidance on the acquisition of advance security technology

• Stay abreast of information security issues and regulatory changes affecting higher education at the state and national level, participate in national policy and practice discussions, and communicate to campus on a regular basis about those topics; engage in professional development to maintain continual growth in professional skills and knowledge essential to the position

Required Qualifications: 

One of the following:

• A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or related field and 5 years of experience as a system administrator, network engineer or similar technical position

• Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity with 2 years of experience as a system administrator, network engineer or similar technical position

• Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity with a professional IT security certification (e.g., CISSP)

• Experience employing information security technologies to assess and mitigate information technology-related security risks

• Familiarity with PCI, HIPAA, FERPA and copyright compliance

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills

• Demonstrated commitment to a diverse work environment, including working with multicultural populations and an understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting women and minorities
